Last Day to Buy Graduation Tickets is Friday!

Last day to purchase graduation tickets is Friday by 3:30 p.m.

There were only 5 or 6 families that took a chance on the raffle for two sets of 4 seats of your choice for graduation. The winners are Cindy Hastings and Julie Rooney. We raised about $60 from this raffle. For those of you with graduates in 2012 and 2013, be sure to take a chance. The odds were good this year!

Last day for Seniors is Friday, June 10th

Graduation is Monday, June 13th. Mandatory rehearsal is from 9:00 -11:00 a.m. at Newport in the gym.

What a whirlwind of activity. We couldn't have asked for a better day for prom. The girls were stunning and the boys incredibly handsome. I congratulate all of our seniors and wish them success wherever life takes them!

I am writing this long email now as I will only have time for a few quick reminder emails before Monday. Please read this thoroughly as there is a lot of information regarding the Commencement Ceremony and Grad Knight. I would even recommend that you print it out. Attached is map/direction flyer from the UW event staff. Directions are also included below.

Mandatory Graduation Rehearsal, Monday 9:00 AM*
All students must attend and participate in this rehearsal to be eligible for participation in the Commencement Ceremony.

* Following the rehearsal. Students that are attending Grad Knight will be able to check in for their bus and get their wrist band. Bus lists will be posted outside the gym if your student is not sure which bus they are on. This will give your graduate a little more time after the graduation ceremony. More information below!

Commencement Ceremony Instructions
Expected behavior by students and guests: Commencment Cermonies for the Class of 2011 are conducted in a dignified and formal manner. Students are expected to exercise good judgement in their appearance and behavior. No artificial noisemakers, air horns, beach balls, bubbles, helium balloons, etc. are allowed in the audience or on the floor where the students are seated. Commencement is a family affair. Guests are expected to be respectful of the occasion.

Cell Phones: Student cell phones and other electronics must be turned off during the ceremony. No pictures, text messaging or gaming on the pavilion floor.

Dress: This is a formal occasion - wear appropriate clothing under gowns. Nice slacks and/or skirts/dresses are encouraged. Dress shoes and/or casual sandals are acceptable. Be sure to wear shoes that you can walk in! NO flip-flops, slippers or very casual tennis shoes. No adornment of gowns or hats at the ceremony - No leis, corsages, stoles, pins and or signs. The only visible items on the outside of the robe are those items that are deemed part of the ceremony by the school administration.

Arrival time for graduates: 6:00 pm at UW-Hec-Ed Pavilion. Students will be informed of the gathering/staging location at the mandatory rehearsal on June 13th. Only graduates are allowed in the staging area and are expected to remain in that area until the graduating class begins the procession.

Food: Plan a snack or light meal prior to arriving at the pavilion. No food or drink will be allowed on the pavilion floor. Beat the traffic and head over early. There are some wonderful restaurants in University Village or around the UW area.

Valuables: There is no secure storage at the arena for the students belongings. DO NOT bring purses, cameras, clothes, etc. on the pavilion floor. These items should be kept by parents/guardians during the ceremony. NHS assumes no responsibility for lost or stolen items.

Directions & Parking: (see attached document): Give yourself plenty of time! Check the DOT website for traffic conditions http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/traffic/seattle/

Directions: From I-5 Going North or South:
1. Follow the signs to Seattle
2. Take Hwy 520 exit toward Bellevue-Kirkland.
3. Travel 1/4 mile and take the Montlake Boulevard exit.
4. At the end of the off ramp there is a stop light at Montlake Boulevard. Turn left.
5. Travel across the Montlake bridge. You will see Hec Ed Pavilion on the right.

From Highway 405 Going North or South:
1. From Hwy 405 take the Freeway 520 exit toward Seattle. This leads you onto the Evergreen Point Floating Bridge heading West.
2. Once across the bridge, take the Montlake Boulevard Exit. Turn Right.
3. Travel across the Montlake bridge. You will see Hec Ed Pavilion on the right.

Parking is in the E-1 Lot at a cost of $15 per vehicle. No Valet parking. Students need to be there at 6:00 and the doors open at 6:00. Handicap parking E-17 located closer to the Pavilion. Bring cash for parking!!! *

* In March, University of Washington's Hec-Ed staff sent an e-mail communicating that parking in the lot near Hec-Ed would cost $7. This is the amount we included in the senior letter sent home recently. On May 12th, UW's transportation center sent an e-mail stating that parking will cost $15.

Commencement: The ceremony will begin promptly at 7:00 p.m. Alaska Airlines Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion. Doors will open to family and guests at 6:00 p.m. Admission will be by ticket only - no tickets will be sold at the door.

Each family receives four (4) free graduation tickets. Additional guest tickets may be purchase for $5 from Elaine Caufield in the main office (before school, during lunch or after school). Your student or a parent on record are the only people that can purchase tickets. Tickets will be sold this week only - Friday, June 10th is the last day to purchase additional graduation tickets.

Audience Seating: There will be no early admission to the arena seating. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. Do not block sections of seats. Check with your graduate following graduation practice Monday morning to determine their seating assignment so you can sit on the same side as your graduate. Seating is reserved for those in wheel chairs. Please stay seated throughout the ceremony.

Handicap access: We do not reserve seats (with the exception of wheel chairs). The arena is fully accessible with ramps and elevators. One entrance door will be designated for Handicap access. Handicap seating is avvailable around the walkway on each level. Family seating is available in the same area.

Pictures: A photographer will be taking a picture of each graduate prior to entering the pavilion and as he/she receives the diploma. Purchase is optional www.gradimages.com. No one will be permitted on the floor during the ceremony to take pictures. Please do not gather near the front or sides to take pictures.

Grad Knight - Following the ceremony 9:15-9:35
Graduates will depart from the rear of the pavillion up to the concourse area. Have your student tell you what side they are sitting on so that you can meet them on the concourse level for a quick photo, change of clothes and gather any cell phones, wallets, purses, etc. It will be hectic! You have about 15 minutes!

Girls will change (if necessary) in the North Gym and the Boys will change in the East Gym. They will then head to the east end of the concourse for Grad Knight check in. We recommend comfortable clothing and shoes. It is casual!

Parents, remember that they can’t take phones, purses, backpacks, cameras, or pretty much anything else to GradKnight, so come prepared with a change of clothes, if needed, and a way to take home all the stuff they can’t take with them.

Bus Check-In/Wrist Bands
If your graduate has their wristband they can go directly to the waiting area "corral". If your student does not have a wrist band they must go to the check-in table and get their bus color wrist band. Volunteers will lead graduates down to bus loading in groups.

Bus Loading Reminder - As required by venues, all seniors will be searched prior to boarding busses. Students will check-in, pat down/searched and volunteers will gather any items not turned over to parents. These will be put in a baggy, marked with the graduate's name and put in a box for each bus. These will be returned to the graduate in the morning when the busses return to Newport. Graduates can bring cameras (we recommend that you put your name on it), yet at their own risk. NHS PTSA or Grad Knights are not responsible for any lost items.

Male and female amenities are provided and available in the restrooms of the venues.

All unapproved/illegal items (including drugs, alcohol, weapons) will be confiscated. Graduates will be given one "No Questions Asked" opportunity to turn over items. We need to emphasize that if items are found during the evening your student may be removed from the event and parents called to pick up their student immediately.

Graduates may not leave the party during any time except for illness and will only be released to their parent (as indicated on the permission form).

Graduates will return by bus to Newport High School parking lot at approximately 5:15 a.m. It is recommended that a parent or someone be there to pick up your graduate. They have been up all night and should not be driving!

Keep the questions coming! I will be sending a detailed email regarding Graduation next week. Here's what is important to know for this week!

If your student has any FINES, please get these paid on or before Wednesday. Make sure they have turned in sports uniforms, etc. A list of students with fines is posted by the accountant's office. Every year that I have helped hand out Senior yearbooks and graduation tickets there are students that stand in line, get to the table and find out they have fines. I found out last week that my student had not paid her National Honor Society fees for the year and I was surprised to see other Seniors on the list. Be sure to have them check the list or check in with Mrs. Pierson.

Community Service forms ( BSD 40 hour graduation requirement) also must be turned in order to receive your graduation tickets.

Wednesday, June 1st - Locker Clean Out - Yearbook Distribution - Graduation Tickets - Caps & Gowns - Pay Fines!

Locker Clean Out is scheduled for 2nd period. If your student does not get checked out, they will not be able to get their yearbooks or graduation tickets.
There will be no allowances made for “I didn’t know I had a locker.”
Locker cleanout is an all-school event. Unless you have an excused absence, there will be no waiving of the fine for “My teacher didn’t tell me.
Seniors will not be able to participate in the Senior Lunch if they have any outstanding fines, including this one.

Yearbook distribution is right after school at 12:30. Location will be announced, yet Seniors are generally in the south end of the commons.

Graduation Tickets - each Senior will receive 4 tickets for free.

Caps & Gowns - Jostens will be handing out Caps & Gowns in the commons.

Spring Band Concert 7:30 p.m.

Thursday, June 2nd - Additional Graduation Tickets Available for $5 each
No Forms Needed. Don't Worry there are plenty of tickets. Please don't overwhelm Ms. Caufield! Come in anytime between June 2nd - June 13th to purchase additional tickets (unless we sell out which is probably impossible). Must be a student or parent/guardian on record to purchase tickets.

Raffle is for 4 - 2011 Graduation Tickets and SAVED SEATS of your choice at Hec Ed Pavilion on Monday, June 13th. There will be two winners, each for 4 Graduation Tickets. This is a $20 value! Opportunities to win are $5.00 each.

Grad Knight Volunteer Training Thursday, June 2nd, 7:00-8:15 pm
We currently have 21 chaperones for the ‘all night’ event. We need another 7-8!!
These volunteers can be Senior parents or any other responsible parents/adult relatives.
Time: 6/13 – 9:30 pm until 5:15 am 6/14.Locations: Hec Ed Pavillion to start..and then two other ‘secret’ locations ..with final ‘drop off’ at NHS

Roles: Overall supervision of kids and ensuring all have a fun, safe time during the venues. Assignments/rotations will be assigned and you’ll have plenty to ‘do’ and see to keep you occupied and AWAKE!

Grad Knight - AWARDS & PRIZES - Deadline June 8th
Typically, during the course of the all night event, there are prizes that are awarded for various games, contests and/or simply raffle drawings. We’d like to make the prizes worthwhile for the graduates and something they could use. We are looking for 12 prizes and can ‘bundle’ smaller items into prize packages.
We would welcome donations of gift cards (itunes, Best Buy, Target, restaurants, etc), new electronics/games, college/dorm room type items, We will gladly accept donations of gift cards/or small items and these can be dropped off in the main office to the attention of Julie Rooney or via email to Tira.Villanueva@verizonbusiness.com
Please note – Any large items and/or ‘easy to lose’ will NOT be handed out at the celebration, but the winner(s) will have certificates for redemption and we will provide the award(s) at either the pickup location (NHS 5:15 am 6/14) or at a location/time to be coordinated with the respective winner.

Senior News! 15 Days to Graduation

We are really winding down here. Please pay attention to the information in these emails over the next 2 weeks. There will be more details regarding the Graduation venue at Hec Ed and Grad Knight as we get closer to June 13th. Remind your students to get their 40 hours of community service hours in and fines paid as soon as possible! They need this done in order to get their yearbooks and graduation tickets on June 1st!

Final Transcripts - information on how your student will notify Newport as to the college attending in the fall will be coming from the counselors soon. I believe the deadline to send these out (from Newport) will be on or before June 24th. As soon as I know, I will let you know!

Rumors of a Senior ditch day - FYI - 18 year olds will NOT be able to write their own notes for skipping school that day....

And remind them to be safe out there....

Prom Tickets - Last day to purchase Prom tickets is tomorrow - Monday May 23rd. Come buy your tickets at 1st or 2nd lunch for $40 each and sign up for pictures at the same time.

Prom protocal - I have had a few questions about prom - since this is a boy ask girl dance, the boy "generally" pays for tickets & dinner. Girls pay for photos. I would suggest splitting any transportation costs. Boys need to rent a tux and buy a corsage. Girls - oh my it is endless - dress, dress alterations, undergarments, shoes, hair, make-up, jewelry, purse, boutionnier....need I go on?

Yearbook Distribution is Wednesday, June 1st immediately after school. You must have a valid ID to pick up your book. Siblings and friends cannot pick up books for one another. You must pay ALL of your school fines before picking up your book. The fines list will be posted outside the accountant’s office. Check to make sure that you DO NOT have fines!!!

Graduation Tickets will be distributed after school on Wednesday, June 1, starting at 12:30. Volunteers - Thank you to those that have stepped up for our kids for Grad Knight. We still need approximately 10 volunteers for the all night event! Please contact Tira if you can help tira.villanueva@verizonbusiness.com

Prize Donations Needed!
As part of our Grad Knight event, we provide random prizes to our GRADUATES for various activities, games and contests that occur during GRAD KNIGHT! We are seeking donations of items our teens would want to use and/or take into college. Gift Cards are the easiest - previous donations are gift cards from Best Buy, Starbucks, Macy's, or music, electronics, housewares, etc. I would suggest amounts in the range of $10 to $50.

We would like these items before June 1st so we are able to ‘bundle’ prizes and/or assign prizes to the various activities (random, game prizes, contest prizes, etc). Ideally we are seeking 12 prizes and we can hold the actual ‘prize’ until the following morning and hand it to the students as they leave the bus.
Please let me know if you can help out. I will be at Newport on May 26th, May 27th and May 31st in the main office. Drop something by or have your student come see me and I will collect them on behalf of the Grad Knight Committee.

We have 319 students signed up for Grad Knight! All students have been assigned to a bus if they did not sign themselves up. If your student has any questions about bus assignments, please let me know.

Grad Knight Tickets
We have 316 Seniors attending Grad Knight. There is still time to buy tickets. Tickets are now $150 and require a signed permission form. Permission forms can be picked up and dropped off with payment in the Grad Knight box in the main office. Financial considerations must be taken to your student's counselor.

Grad Knight Bus sign-ups, Wednesday May 18th
The next bus sign-up date is Wednesday, May 18th from 12:30-2:00 p.m. If your student has not signed up for a bus or wants to make a change, please tell them to come to the table outside of the main office.

Prom is Saturday, June 4th at the Shilshole Bay Beach Club from 7pm-12am.
Tickets are $40 per person and will be on sale everyday at lunch and Wednesday after school starting Monday, May 16th and the last day to purchase tickets is Monday, May 23rd.
If you are bringing a guest, the last day to turn in the form for a Guest Pass (which you need to purchase tickets) is Friday, May 20th. Japanese Disaster Relief Yard Sale, Saturday May 21st 9:00 a.m - 4:00 p.m.
The Newport Yearbook class and Natural Disaster Relief club are joining forces to host a yard sale benefiting Japanese disaster relief. Grad Knight Bus sign-ups, Wednesday May 18th
The next bus sign-up date is Wednesday, May 18th from 12:30-2:00 p.m. If your student has not signed up for a bus or wants to make a change, please tell them to come to the table outside of the main office. This may be their last opportunity to sign up for a bus!

Grad Knight Tickets
Time is running out to get your tickets to the best post-graduation party ever! Grad Knight is an all-night, chaperoned event designed for fun and your last chance to be together as the class of 2011. Busses will transport you from Hec Ed to a number of venues where you're sure to have a great time. But you can’t go if you don’t buy a ticket. Tickets are now $150 and require a signed permission form. Turn your signed form and check into the Grad Knight box in the office.

We are looking for 15 more volunteers for Grad Knight to accompany our Seniors for their last 'Hurrah' and celebration of their accomplishments and graduation! Senior Awards Night
You may have received an invitation to the Senior Awards Night. Every year Newport’s graduating class includes dozens of scholarship winners and academic achievers who deserve special recognition. The school could truly spend days honoring them all, but some of you might not have time for that. Instead, we have a lovely evening of awards. There are also a couple of musical performances. This is a school-sponsored event. Honorees are listed in the final edition of the Knightline each year. They cover pages!! Some honors are scholarships that students have applied for. Each department also recognizes students for achievement.

There are two honors that are given automatically to students who have earned them. The students who reach these heights sometimes get the idea that because there are so many of them it isn’t a very special award when just the opposite is true. These students should be proud of their accomplishments and smile when they receive their award!

The President’s Education Award is given to all students who have earned a 3.5 GPA or higher AND attained an SAT score in the 85th percentile or higher.
Washington State Honors is bestowed on students who finish in the top 10% of all Washington students for the year based on GPA and SAT/ACT scores

PTSA Inspirational Sponsored (Baccalaureate) Event 2011 – June 12th PAC
Be sure and mark your calendars to attend the PTSA Sponsored Event on June 12th from 2 - 4pm in the PAC (Performing Arts Center) It is one of the graduation ceremonies that will bring your student's educational experience full circle. This is an opportunity for to reflect on where you've been, where you are and where you will be going in your future with your graduating peers. We will be highlighting a guest speaker to share an enlightening and inspirational talk, picking a winner to share their Community Compassion Challenge experience and win a prize of acknowledgement for their participation in our theme of "Be The Change, Small Acts ~ Big Heart" and more! Winners must be present to win! Be part of the challenge for the month of May and do a Random Act of Kindness - do something nice for someone else for no reason at all except to make them smile! Grab a note card in the office and share your experience by putting it in the Challenge Box in the school office. If you are someone who has had someone do something for you feel free to share your experience as well. June 2nd all entries will be collected and winner will be drawn. We need a total of 34 of us to accompany our Graduates to ensure we help keep it fun, all inclusive and safe for everyone.It actually is fun to see the kids and their camaraderie as they celebrate with friend and we send them off into the 'real world'. All these years of carpools, practices, rehearsals, lessons, sickness and health..here is your 'last time' to 'volunteer'.

Here is what it entails:

AFTER GRADUATION, you will head to the Assigned Bus/Check in area in Hec Ed. Each bus will have 4 chaperones.
You will have responsibilities such as:
- Check in (ensure only those teens and all those teens are on your assigned bus)
- On the bus, you will ensure the ride is safe and answer any questions from the kids, if they arrive.
(we will provide you with 'cheat sheets' and reach numbers, etc)

At the Venue(s), 2-3 of you will immediately leave the bus and head to the venue for the assignments for specific 'stations'.

The others will help unload the kids and get them to the venue safely.

After each Venue, as we load the kids back on, you make sure all the SAME kids..and all of them, get back on your bus.

The hours: 30 mins after Graduation until about 5-5:30 am June 14th.

YES it's a long night..YES we feed you..YES you get tired and energized at the same time…and YES we need you!!

Ticket Sales:

I have included Senior information and other Newport events to get on your calendar. Our seniors attended a mandatory meeting on March 25th. Ask to see the packet. "Infinity and Beyond-Class of 2011 Seniors - All Things Important Prior To Our Graduation".

Baccalaureate
Baccalaureate is an event sponsored entirely by Newport’s PTSA. Our PTSA pays the full rate for the NHS Theater for this event so that students may express views that include the importance of faith in their lives. Baccalaureate is an inspirational, uplifting, and often very moving presentation that celebrates where students have been and where they are going. Students are invited to speak and perform music of their own choosing. Attendance is optional for students & their families. The Junior Class parents help with the reception following Baccalaureate serving refreshments. The question everyone asks about Baccalaureate is this: “Is it a religious ceremony?” By definition it is a religious ceremony, but in practice, the answer depends on how it has been planned & what selections the students have elected to sing or read. Sometimes there’s religious content, and sometimes there isn’t. Mostly students talk about the challenges they’ve faced and the road they see ahead of them. It’s always touching and a wee bit emotional. And because it’s a PTSA event, there will be snacks afterwards. This is a nice event to invite friends & family to, because there’s lots of time to visit after.

Baccalaureate Theme: Be The Change - Small Acts Big Heart
Student speakers needed to speak on how each one of us has a duty and responsibility to be accountable for our actions and how it impacts the future of our world today.

Baccalaureate Speakers & Scouts Sought
Does your student want to speak at Baccalaureate? We are interested in hearing from any student who wants to offer inspirational and uplifting thoughts through a reading or original work. We are especially interested in hearing from students who want to offer brief prayers, blessings, or brief readings from a variety of faith traditions. We have students from all over the world at Newport. It would be wonderful to hear from them! Contact Teresa Pates kplus4@msn.com or you can contact me if your student is interested.

Jazz 1 has been invited back to Hot Java Cool Jazz. For the last two years, we have sold the most tickets and have received a generous grant for the band program. Join us for an evening out with the Newport Jazz band and our guest artist, Tom Scott. Tom Scott is a renowned composer, arranger, producer, musical director and saxophonist. The Jazz Gala is the main fundraiser for the Newport Band. The funds raised during this event have provided instruments, uniforms, lessons, music and teaching assistance and has contributed to making Newport an award winning program. Seattle Adaptive Sports, Mercer Island High School and Newport High School Team Up to Sponsor an Exhibition Wheelchair Basketball Game.
Paralympic basketball players, the Junior Sonics, will take part in a basketball game against teams consisting of students and staff from Newport and Mercer Island High School. There will also be a silent auction before and during the game as well as a raffle to raise money for Seattle Adaptive Sports college scholarships for paralympic athletes:

Hi there Senior Parents. The end is getting nearer all the time. I have included as much Senior information and dates that I know of as of today. There is a lot of information, so please read carefully.

On March 25th your student will attend a mandatory Senior Meeting (this will take place in the morning during the elections assembly. Seniors will go to the outside gym. Seniors will be voting on things related to graduation including: Junior students to serve as laurel guards, the "ABC" Awards that appear in the last issue of the Knightlife and athletic awards.. Jostens will be here to hand out announcements and other items ordered by your student. If your student will miss this day of school, have them see Mrs. Caufield in the office on Monday when they return. She will give them everything that was handed out as well as give them a chance to vote.

Grad Knight
Don't forget to get your Grad Knight ticket for $130 before the price goes up to $150 on April 1st. Visit our website to register and pay for your ticket. The permission form is located on the website for you to download! http://www.newportptsa.org/NHSContent.asp?KEY=CLASS2011 If you prefer, you can pick up a permission form in hard copy in the Newport's main office - they are in the Grad Knight box on the right corner of the front desk. You may also drop your check and paperwork in this location.

Grad Knight parents will be at school during lunches on Thursday, March 24th and March 31st to assist your student with registration and getting permission slips signed. If your student is in need of a scholarship (full or partial), have them see their counselor ASAP. If you know at this point that you will NOT be attending the event or have any questions, please let me know.

Bus sign-ups will begin mid-May for students that have completed all registration steps.

Musicians and Artists
Senior music auditions for 2011 Graduation, Senior Awards and a PTSA sponsored event will be held Tuesday, April 12th. If you student is interested in performing at any of these events please pick up an information packet in the Main Office. The completed application is due back to the Main Office on Thursday, March 31 at 3:00. When your student turns in their application they will sign up for an audition time. Auditions will take place the morning of April 12th during HSPE testing. Mrs. Caufield is accepting original artwork for the cover of the 2011 Graduation Program, Senior Awards Program and a PTSA sponsored event. Please see Mrs. Caufield in the Main Office if you would like to submit artwork.

Administrators are meeting with the UW Hec Ed folks this week. I will have more information to share about number of tickets and the process to get additional tickets very soon. More information to follow!

Community Service Hours-Knight Valor
According to the counselors and the registrar, 110 seniors have NOT met the community service graduation requirement. Is your student one of them? Verify student hours at www.newportptsa.org (& click the Community Service Tab). Counselors have sent reminder notices to all 110 seniors, so please help them remember to turn their completed community service forms in as soon as possible. Additional community service opportunities are listed in the daily school bulletin. There will also be a community service table set up during lunch on March 22, 29 and April 19. Students can drop forms off then, as well as ask questions.

The Knight Valor deadline is April 22nd. This year we will NOT be having an assembly; students will, however receive a recognition certificate and Knight Valor pin.

3/14/2011 What to do when a college says ‘no’

My guest is Patrick O’Connor, director of college counseling at Roeper School in Birmingham, Michigan, and the author of “College is Yours in 600 Words or Less.”

The real March Madness has already begun, as some of the most selective colleges release their admissions decisions. For parents and school counselors looking for ways to support students who may receive an unexpected rejection, here are some important facts to share:

* Most selective colleges are reporting a huge increase in the number of applications.

* Since this also happened last year, many colleges enrolled too many students last fall. They’ll have to make up for that, so many colleges will be admitting fewer students this year....

* ....and wait-listing more students. This increase means fewer students will be admitted from the wait list come May—and if they are admitted, financial aid will be scarce.

Then again, if none of that does any good, just say this:

* 850.

No, this is not the high score on some new version of the SAT. 850 is the number of valedictorians rejected last year from one of America’s most prestigious colleges. These students represented the best in their high schools; they did everything they were “supposed” to do—and yet, they didn’t even get to the wait list.

When students hear this, they usually think one of two things:

1. “Wow, they put in all of that work for nothing.”

2. “Geez, if they can’t get in, I don’t stand a chance.”

It certainly had to be hard for those students to be turned down by a school they loved—but did all of that preparation really lead to nothing? Given everything these students had learned, the many ways they had grown, and how they overcame adversity and embraced creativity in making Plans B, C, and Q, did they really get nothing out of it?

If so, they have every right to be unhappy, but not with the college. They should be unhappy for letting the sun rise and set 1307 times from the first day of 9th grade to the day the college said no, never once appreciating all that each of those days had to offer in and of themselves.

They should hang their heads a little to realize, just now, the difference they’ve made to their classmates, their teammates, and the people they served in the soup kitchen.

And if they look back with a little regret on the many times they blew off a compliment from a parent or a teacher, that’s more than OK. They now know it was at that moment that the goal of fully living each day was conquered with a flourish. Understanding that will make each day all the richer at the wonderful college that admitted them.

This leads to point 2, about the student you’re talking to, and their application. Colleges are looking for great students who have done wonderful things with their lives, and will work nicely with the other students that are coming to campus. That blend goes beyond test scores and class rank—it goes to who the student is, what they care about, and how they see the world.

The thing to focus on then is not who told them no, but who told them yes. If a college wants them but runs out of room, that’s the college’s fault; if the college doesn’t see the student for who they really are, well, maybe that’s not the place for them after all. Either way, the student’s contributions will be greatly admired, and badly needed, by the college that has the good sense to tell them yes—which means any no, from any college, simply cannot touch them.

PTA Meeting/Math Presentation
Wednesday night’s PTSA meeting will feature a presentation starting at 7:00 p.m. Some Newport math classes are piloting (and helping to improve) a new Standards Based Assessment and Reporting system. Attention College Bound Girls!
Find out about college sorority life at the Overlake Panhellenic Information Forum. College bound high school women and their parents are invited to attend this informal meeting on college sororities. It’s your Senior’s final semester at Newport!! Do whatever you can to guard against the dreaded plague, Senioritis. Colleges do check grades of their admitted students.

The counseling center wants to remind you that college scholarship information is available on the Newport High website and in the counseling center. Do you know the biggest problem most scholarship committees have? Getting applicants. There are usually too few applicants. Don’t let any of this wonderful scholarship money pass you by – apply!!

Grad Knight Update
If you can believe it we have only 4 months to go until our kids pick up their diplomas and head off to Grad Knight! We are happy to report that over 50% of you have already purchased your tickets which is *great* and we thank you for doing this. The price is currently $130.00 but will be going up in April so don't delay in going online to purchase your tickets or pick up a permission form in the office and drop a check off in the Grad Knight box as soon as possible. This is a wonderful way to reward your child for all of their hard work and give them an opportunity to celebrate with their friends one last time as a group.

BSD Graduation Requirement
We currently have 140 seniors who have not satisfied the 40 hours of community service BSD graduation requirement. Is your student one of them? Check community service hours at www.newportptsa.org and click the Community Service tab. Forms may be turned into the counseling center anytime or on Tuesday, February 15, PTSA will be collecting community service forms during lunch.

Food Handlers Permit
Interested in working in the food industry/at a restaurant now or this summer? The Food Handlers Permit Test will be given on Thursday, February 17th during 5th period (10:50 – 12:20) in the Theatre. This test is open to anyone who has permission from their 5th period teacher to miss class, brings $10.00 cash and a photo ID. The Food Handler Permits will be handed out to happy recipients approximately 2 weeks after the test.

Seniors – Class of 2011 Reminders & Resources from the Counseling Center
FAFSA: If you haven’t filled this out already and are planning on attending college (2 or 4 year) next year, SUBMIT the FAFSA ASAP! Go to www.fafsa.ed.gov (ONLY USE THIS WEBSITE, THERE ARE SCAMS OUT THERE) Receiving financial aid dollars is first come, first served! Remember there is also the CSS Profile financial aid form that some private colleges want you to submit. Many schools have Financial Aid deadlines in January and February!

FAFSA College Goal Sunday – Do you need help filling out the FAFSA – then go to the College Goal Sunday event this coming Sunday, 1/16 at Interlake from 2-4 PM. Register online at www.collegegoalsundaywa.org and be sure to select Interlake.

Midyear reports: For any colleges you applied to on the common application, we will submit the midyear report. If your student has any additional information they would like us to share on the midyear report (awards or new info for colleges), please stop by and let us know. If there are any midyear reports for schools not on the common application, bring in the form (if not submitted already), a stamp and the address and we will send it in. Please don’t worry about Final reports, we will automatically send these in at the end of the year, once we know where you are going.

Community Service: Keep encouraging your senior to plug away at their 40 hours. Stop by if you need ideas. If you just need to turn in the paperwork, bring it to the counseling center this week! Many seniors say they have done their hours, but they haven’t done the forms – remember it doesn’t “count” until the forms are in & approved! Check your students hours on the PTSA website!

Scholarships/Financial Aid info: Stop by the counseling center for the latest scholarships and check out the bulletin on the NHS counseling website. A new scholarship site for Washington State Residents is www.Thewashboard.org See your counselor for other tips! Also visit the NHS Counseling Center Website and review the PowerPoint from Parent Financial Aid night in December which has links to various scholarship searches and explains everything about Financial Aid!

College Applications: UW Bothell and UW Tacoma are still accepting applications along with Western Washington University, Central Washington and Eastern Washington. Students should see us if they want to chat about options!

Community College: If your student is going to attend a community college next year, enroll in March to get priority for registering for classes in the fall (make sure you enroll for fall, 2011).

It’s hard to wait: The hardest thing is to wait to hear back from colleges. Colleges officially have until April 1st to notify applicants and then students have until May 1st to make their decision and notify all schools of their decision. If a friend has heard but your student hasn’t, stay positive, it doesn’t mean that they won’t get in!

Graduation---Encourage your senior to stay focused as they go into finals and 2nd semester so they don’t jeopardize graduation or college acceptance or scholarships for next year. They have worked too hard to let the last semester cause any regret.

College Conference
The Bellevue School District will hold its annual College Conference "Future By Design" on Wednesday, January 26 at Interlake High School and Thursday, January 27 at Sammamish High School. This event will begin each evening at 6:00 p.m. with keynote speaker, Dr. Karen Copetas, Director of Admissions and Enrollment Planning from Western Washington University. The girl-ask-guy dance, will be this Saturday, 12/11/10. Our theme this year is Masquerade! Tickets will be on sale next week on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday during both lunches. Tickets can also be purchased after school on Wednesday and Thursday in the commons. Ticket price is $12.00 with ASB, $13.00 without ASB card. If you are inviting a guest from another school make sure you stop by the main office and get the necessary Guest Pass paperwork. The deadline for turning in the Guest Pass is Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. There will be no ticket sales on Friday or Saturday.

Reflections
Newport students submitted 37 pieces of art (literature, music, dance, photography, and visual art) to this year’s Reflections competition. The submissions have been judged and 30 will move on to the Crossroads exhibit and district-level judging. Newport finalists will be announced at the Reflections Recognition Event and Celebration on Wednesday, December 15, at 2:00 pm in the Newport High School Library.

Jostens - Grad Products Ordering - Monday, November 22nd
Reminder that tomorrow during both lunches Mike Annis will be at Newport to take order forms for graduation. Depending on what you are ordering, payment or a deposit must accompany the order form.

Here's some additional information that should be helpful:
- Each grad purchases a red gown and the cap/tassel. If you previously purchased a gown you may re-use it (or borrow a neighbor's). They iron beautifully. Students can use their siblings gowns as well.
- If you borrow a gown or have one handed down by a sibling, you can just order a Cap & Tassel Only. The cost is $20. (Look on the order form right hand corner Section 4 above Total Your Order and you will see the area to check). The Newport Class of 2011 flyer in the cap & gown section has the price listed.
- If you are thinking of ordering announcements, do it now. If you decide you want announcements later in the year, it may be too late. Prices are higher and the announcement design will be different. Jostens says their average student order is about $120.
- A $60 deposit is requested when you place your order (cash, check or credit card). Josten's will send an invoice for the balance.
- Caps/gowns and announcement orders will be picked up in school April 2011

Recommended by a parent of a current college freshman! The book is broken into two parts – senior year of high school and freshman year of college. It has been a long tradition at Newport High School that immediately following the Graduation Ceremony, the students’ board buses and are taken out for a night of safe celebration with their classmates. The celebration is a chaperoned, alcohol and drug-free, all night party that is held at secret and special venues. For graduating seniors, this is one of the most anticipated occasions of their year!

The Grad Knight committee has been working hard to coordinate a Holiday Gift Fair as a fundraiser for Grad Knight. We need your help in getting the word out! Please forward the attached flyer to your contacts, neighbors and friends. Print the flyer and bring it to your work, gym, church, etc. Post the information to your Facebook page. If everyone forwards it to at least 10 friends we will be reaching over 4,000 people!

In addition to getting the word out we need you to come shop too!

It’s a collection of over 30 vendors selling high quality items at a great price to you – while helping the Newport Seniors have a great graduation celebration!

Booster bus- Tickets on sale Tuesday & Wednesday!
Come cheer on the Knights in Pasco for the Football game! The bus will leave 8:30 AM Saturday morning and return late Saturday. Plan on bringing a sack lunch and money for food – it’s a long day. The cost for bus transportation is $20. Game tickets are not included (tickets for students with ASB are $6). Bus Tickets will be sold at both lunches on Tuesday and Wednesday morning or until sold out -students have first priority and if there is space available adults can buy tickets. Come support the Knights at State!

Volleyball - Newport 2nd Seed from Kingco 4A
The Lady Knights are headed to the Washington State 4A Championship in Kennewick November 11-12 as the 2nd seed from KingCo 4A. Newport finished 2nd in KingCo 4A after losing to Issaquah in straight sets in the championship game Thursday, November 4 at Bothell High School. It's been an exciting season, and it's not over yet! Good luck at State, ladies!

As I said earlier in the year - this is a year of "lasts". For many of our senior athletes their season is over or they are heading onto state athletic events. I have listed some events below, yet if there are more to recognize, please let me know (not all websites are updated). At the end of the fall season, I would like to give "kudos" to our Senior students for athletic, academic or fine arts efforts! So if you have a student that should be recognized, please let me know that too!

I have had questions regarding Baby ads for the yearbook and just wanted to let you know that info will be coming out once it is determined by the yearbook publishing company. Per the Yearbook advisor, it is usually mid-January, early February. I will keep you posted and provide this info as soon as I get it.

Just a reminder that November 17th, Wednesday at 12:30 our seniors will be meeting with Jostens regarding graduation (caps, gowns, announcements, etc.)

Girls Volleyball l
ost to Issaquah in the KingCo 4A playoffs tonight and are the #2 KingCo seed to State. It was an exciting match between two great teams. Now on to Washington State 4A Championships November 11th & 12th at the Toyota Center in Kennewick

Boys Water Polo
Be sure to go out and support Boys Water Polo at the State Tournament this Friday and Saturday! Games are at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way. There are some real grudge matches so it should be exciting! Friday games are at 6:30 and 8:10. Saturday games start at 9:45, with the championship game at 4:30.

Girls Swim and Dive
Congratulations to the undefeated Newport Girls Swim & Dive Team, 4A Kingco League Champs and the 2010 GIRLS KINGCO CHAMPS! Come to the Districts swim Meet on Saturday at the UW Pool on Nov 6th, it’s going to be close between Newport and Skyline!

Ski Swap Volunteers Needed: The Ski Swap is coming! If you haven’t taken the opportunity to help out here, why not give it a try? It’s fun and you’ll see a million people you know! Visit www.skiswap.info to sign up. Click on the tab on the left, Volunteers. Key times are Friday evening, Saturday AM, Saturday evening and then Sunday. Students can earn volunteer hours and we need adult volunteers too! SELLING gear? Register your items ahead of time.

BSF Phonathon Callers Needed: There is a dire need of adult and student volunteers for the Bellevue Schools Foundation Phonathon on November 8th, 9th, or 10th. For more information, and to sign up as a volunteer contact Lynn Feiges lsfeiges@hotmail.com. The phonathon takes place at a local call center in Factoria (right off Richards Rd at BioControl Systems, 12822 SE 32nd Bellvue 98005) and students will be trained (with free pizza and beverage) at 6:30 on Monday and Tuesday night. Then the calls start at 7 pm and go until 9 pm. On Wednesday, the calling takes place at WISC, and they are needing fewer volunteers, although your help is still welcome. BSF funds a variety of programs to increase rigor and support students throughout the district. Here is one area that directly supports our students at the high school level. Knowledge in Action, Project-based Learning Approach to High School Advanced Placement Courses – The George Lucas Educational Foundation funded program is redesigning AP curriculum to provide deeper learning for high school students. 2010/11 will be year 3 for the project-based AP U.S. Government & Policy course and year 1 for the project-based AP Environmental Science course. Come support NHS Theatre Arts and see the comedy "The Foreigner" by Larry Shue, November 4th, 5th, and 6th in the Newport Performing Arts Center at 7:30pm. Seattle National College Fair: Sunday, November 14, 2010 from 12-4pm and Monday, November 15, 2010 from 9am-12pm at the Washington State Convention Center. Admission is FREE! Online student registration is now open! When your students pre-register, a bar coded confirmation page is produced. When printed and brought to the fair, this page acts as the student’s electronic ID. Utilizing this barcode eliminates the need for students to fill out inquiry cards at the booths they visit. Online registration leaves more time for students and parents to chat with more admissions representatives. Encourage your students to register before they come to the fair! Here is how the process works:

Step 1: Visit www.gotomyncf.com prior to attending the fair to register. Students will be asked a few short questions regarding their graduation information, home address, and interested major so schools can send them information after the Fair.

Step 2: Complete the online registration form. Print the barcode identification page and have students bring it along to the fair.

Step 3: Colleges at the fair will scan the student's barcode to access their information, allowing more time for one-on-one conversations and less time filling out inquiry cards.

Grad Knight 2011 Tickets
Our students graduate on June 13, 2011. Immediately following the graduation ceremony at UW’s Hec Edmundson Pavilion is an all-night event for seniors only (and adult chaperones). Newport PTSA coordinates this exciting and safe all-night celebration called “Grad Knight”. It is an evening filled with friends, food, games and prizes and the making of many great memories. While fundraising is underway to cover part of the costs, Grad Knight tickets must still be purchased. Partial or full scholarships are also available (have your student see the counselors to obtain). We have over 400 seniors and we hope they will all celebrate their graduation night together in a most fun and safe environment!

Tickets are available at a special discounted price of $111 until November 1st. After November 1st, ticket prices are $130

Or you can submit paperwork and checks to the school office. Even if your student isn't sure he/she wants to go, from past experience we have found that in the excitement of graduation many seniors decide to go at the last minute. 2011年6月13日に、皆さんのお子さんたちのハイスクール卒業式が予定されています。ワシン
トン大学のHec Edmundson Pavilionでの卒業式直後には、シニアのためだけの(もちろん大人
の付き添い付きです)オールナイトのイベントが予定されています。
ニューポート・ハイスクールのPTSAではエキサイティングで安全に楽しめるお祝いのイベント「グラ
ッド・ナイト(Grad Knight)」を計画しています。友人たちと一緒に過ごす、食事、ゲームや賞品
が数々用意された一晩は、たくさんの思い出を作り上げることでしょう。
グラッド・ナイトの必要経費をまかなうためにファンドレイザーが予定されていますが、それでも参
加する卒業生にはチケットを購入していただく必要があります。必要な方のためには、全額また
は一部のスカラーシップによる援助も用意されています。(援助が必要な方は、お子さんにカウン
セラーと面接の予約をとるようお話しください。)
今年のニューポート・ハイスクールの卒業生は400人以上です。最高に楽しく、そして安全な環
境の中で、卒業生全員に思い出に残る一晩を過ごしてもらうことが理想です。

Just a couple of reminders today!

Seniors will have the opportunity to attend the College Essay Writing Seminar in the library tomorrow (Wednesday) 7:30-10:00 am. English teachers and counselors will be available to review student's work. Senior meeting and Senior Photo to follow. Meet in the outside gym. Class sweats will be picked up at this time. Tutorial is available from 11:30 to 12:30.

Hall Decs Thursday 4:00-9:00. If you feel like dropping off snacks or waters the students will appreciate it!

We hope to see you at the Homecoming Tailgate BBQ Friday before the game Varsity Football vs. Redmond starts at 7:00 p.m.

Spread the word..and get your cheer going in a more mellow fashion at VINO at The Landing, Sunday 3:00-5:00 p.m.- $20/per person. Pay at Vino’s on Sunday and the proceeds will benefit our Grad Knight 2011 fundraising efforts. Bring your friends and try 4 different “Autumn Foliage ” wines. Participate in wine tasting tips & pick your favorites for upcoming holidays as well! Guess the Grape(s) correctly and you can enter in the drawing for a $25 Vino’s Gift Card! Picture Retake Day is October 20th. You must have your picture packet to have your picture retaken. Picture packets from both August check in days and Picture makeup day are available in the main office to be picked up before and after school, at lunch, or between classes.

The 25th annual Newport Ski Swap is coming up Nov 12th & 13th. This is the coolest, most amazing, wonderful, special, fabulous PTSA fundraiser in the universe. (Not Homecoming related, yet needs to be said).

- It offers thousands of people the chance to purchase ski/snowboard equipment at low cost.
- It offers hundreds of NHS students the chance to earn BSD & Knight Valor hours.
- It offers mostly new merchandise, unsold from last year.
- It offers people the chance to sell old gear on consignment (clear out your closet now!)

Newport PTSA has been generating more than $1,500 each year by using the eScrip program. The more parents, friends and family members that register, the more EASY money that PTSA receives. We are heading into our 4th week of school. Everything seemed to get busier this last week with homework, sports and activities!
Open House this week! We will have a Grad Knight table to answer questions, drop off permission forms/payments, buy beach towels and get your Newport tattoos. Senior ASB officers will be selling Newport license plate covers and other items! Be sure to attend the Senior grade level meeting at 6:15 before the class presentations begin at 7:00.

Grad Knight Updates- please, please read this info as it has the most up-to-date information on tickets, fundraising and other senior specific information. As we get closer to graduation and senior deadlines, you will get emails on a regular basis specific to these events. Garage Sale
Thanks to all for your donations, help, set-up and clean-up for the Newport Shores Grad Knight 2011 event. We raised $1,773.05

A special thanks to Gwen Vanloos and family for the use of their home/driveway for this event and to all the volunteers that made it happen! Everything worked out beautifully. The Northwest Center truck drove through at the end of the day and picked up all of the extra items (which really wasn't too much of a haul). We are off to a great start!

PIV is live! Use your student ID # and password to log on. Any students new to the school got their passwords in their 2nd period class on Wednesday. Parents will not be receiving notification from the district. Please ask your student for the password for access to PIV. Go to https://grades.bsd405.org/piv/ and follow the instructions. If you have any questions, please contact the office.

Open House - Thursday, September 23rd
This event has several components – Grade-Level Meeting, Open House to Meet Teachers, Classroom Bucks Fundraiser, and Shopping!!

Grade-Level Meeting: Parents and guardians from each class will meet in four different places around the school. Locations for these meetings will be posted in the Commons when you arrive. This meeting is scheduled for 6:15 pm until 6:55 pm and it will be conducted by one of the Senior counselors.

Open House: From 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm you will follow your child’s class schedule – 10 minutes per period and a 5-minute passing period. Your student will fill out a schedule for you to use during the Open House. Volunteers will have class schedules to hand out that evening but there will be very, very long lines that may delay you from getting to the Grade-Level Meeting or your student’s classrooms. Volunteers will also have school maps to distribute. Ask your student to write out their schedule.

Classroom Bucks: During 2nd period of Open House, a student volunteer will visit each classroom to collect cash and checks for this PTSA fundraiser. Over $15, 000 in grants were contributed last year to supplement supplies and equipment to enhance curriculum.

Shopping: There will be many tables set up throughout the Commons with representatives from the PTSA and various sports and clubs. You may visit these tables before, during, and after the events mentioned above. Groups will have information to hand out or various booster items to sell – blankets, sweatshirts, license plate covers, water bottles, etc. – so don’t forget your checkbook!

Open House volunteers needed! Does your student need community service hours? Help at Open House night on Sept 23rd from about 5:30 to 9:00 pm. Students sign up in the Main Office.

This is a great way to keep your student on task regarding college applications, financial aid deadlines and general college planning. Print it out and keep a copy for yourself and give one to your student! Please note the college visit schedule listed below. If your student is considering other options, Barb Mercier in the Career Center (office located between the accountant and ASB offices) is a fabulous resource!

Grad Knight 2011 Fundraiser - Newport Shores Garage Sale, Saturday, September 11th 9am – 4pm Vanloos Home - 16 Lopez Key

Support our kids Grad Knight by donating and/or volunteering for the annual Newport Shores Garage Sale. The Vanloos Family graciously volunteered their “garage” for the 2011 fundraising event. We can use additional help with clean-up and a Goodwill run at the end of the day.

Donations: You can drop off your donations at their home on Wednesday September 8th or Thursday, September 9th from 4:00-7:00 p.m. (Google their address for directions). Please make sure all donations are clean and in good shape. Please consider that if it doesn’t sell it will be donated to Goodwill. We do not want to pay dump fees for any undesirable items. Please separate items by category, i.e. kitchen, bathroom, knick-knacks, sports, books, CD’s, small electronics, etc and place them in a bag or box and clearly mark by category. This will make it easier for those who will be setting up the sale. If you are donating furniture and it does not sell, you will be responsible for picking it up. Shopping bags needed also.

Students will pick up their official schedule in the commons (near the student store) Monday morning. DISCO DANCE!
The Disco Dance is the first Friday of school, Sept 3rd, 9:00 pm to Midnight.
Tickets will be sold Tuesday, Aug 31 (both lunches), Wednesday, Sept 1 (after school), and Thursday (both lunches and after school). No sales on Friday. Tickets are $5 w/o ASB and $4 with ASB. Completed Guest Passes due Wednesday, Sept 1 by 3:15 - no exceptions!. Guest Pass forms are available in the office. This pass is used to buy a ticket to the dance for the guest. Guest passes are not transferrable, and must be filled out for each dance, even if it is for the same guest. This process is to provide security for our dances, and assures we can identify everyone who attends the dance.

Fall Packet
Let's go through a few important items in the fall packet for the last time. Seniors turn out for Check-In Day on Wednesday, August 18th. Please follow the arrival times listed in the packet.

Have I ever mentioned how surprised students are when they show up to check-in day and realize they actually have to pay their fines? Your student will not be able to turn out for fall sports, purchase ASB, or receive their parking permit if a fine is not resolved. Your student can pay the fine prior to Check-In Day 1-12 and 1-3 M-F in the accountant's office or on Check-In Day.

Student Profile
Release of Information about student: for privacy reasons, many parents check N to the question here “Should directory information be released as explained above? Please read this paragraph carefully. It means that…..
· The family won’t be in the directory (unless they fill out the directory form and opt back in).
· The student’s name won’t appear on the honor roll or any other published list of student achievement.
· The student’s name won’t appear in the graduation program.

Yearbook - be sure to purchase one as you don't want to wait until June. Senior pictures - the yearbook uses the photo taken on check-in day for the Senior section. If these don't turn out well, retakes are scheduled for September 8th. If you have a wonderful senior photo taken at a studio, you can put this in the yearbook in the Baby Ad section. More information to follow later in the fall.

Parking! Please read the policy and instructions thoroughly!
Yes, parking permits are $100. Fines must be paid prior to purchasing a parking permit. Proof of insurance and valid driver's license are required. Students and parents must read, complete, sign and date the parking application. If your student is unable to attend Check-In, parents can come in and take care of parking permits with ID and all the other student required documents at the scheduled time only. The same rules apply for parents and students...

The next flyer that I would like to draw your attention to is the Senior Activity/Expense timeline. Keep this handy as it is a pretty accurate timeline of activities as we lead up to graduation. This is different from the Senior Planning Calendar (attached) from the Counselors.

Graduation: Late breaking news that Graduation will be held this year at Hec Ed at the University of Washington campus on Monday, June 13th. More information will follow as the logistics are worked out.

Grad Knight (senior party)

Grad Knight is 100% sponsored/financed/planned/executed by the 2011 Grad Knight Committee of Newport’s PTSA. Grad Knight is a safe, extremely well supervised, all-night party immediately following graduation. And it is a complete surprise for the students as they have no knowledge of the venues and activities. As hard as this may be to believe today, our kids will feel incredibly close to one another the week of graduation and will eagerly embrace this one last chance to be together.

The party is completely alcohol & drug-free. Graduates bring nothing with them and no one can crash the party. No one can leave early. It’s carefully chaperoned. Our graduates get to enjoy being with one another without any "distractions".

Grad Knight can be very expensive. Upwards of $45,000 to $50,000, if past parties are any indication. The average cost per attendee can range from $150 - $175, depending on how many kids attend. Tickets to Grad Knight generally go for about $100 -$125 and the Grad Knight committee generally makes sure full or partial scholarships are available for students unable to pay. Students will need to see their counselor if a scholarship is needed.

There will be GRAD KNIGHT 2011 information in your back-to-school packets in August. In this packet will be the lowest price ticket offer for Grad Knight 2011. Consider taking advantage of this as the price will increase during the school year.

Our class got a very early start with fundraising our sophomore and junior year with towel sales, VINO events, letter writing campaigns and we benefit a bit each year as parties end the year with extra money. PTSA has a tradition of splitting leftover Grad Knight Party funds among the three remaining classes.

Please support our events this upcoming year and help in whatever way you can as our fabulous chair, Tira Villaneuva and the rest of the Grad Knight committee work to raise money for this event!

Baccalaureate

Baccalaureate is the other event sponsored entirely by Newport’s PTSA and is held in the Performing Arts Center (PAC) at Newport.

Baccalaureate is an inspirational, uplifting, and often very moving presentation that celebrates where students have been and where they are going. There is a guest speaker and students are invited to speak and perform music of their own choosing. Attendance is optional for students & their families.

The question everyone asks about Baccalaureate is this: “Is it a religious ceremony?” By definition it is a religious ceremony, but in practice, the answer depends on how it has been planned & what selections the students will sing or read. Sometimes there’s religious content, and sometimes there isn’t. Mostly students talk about the challenges they’ve faced and the road they see ahead of them. It’s always touching and a wee bit emotional. This is a nice event to invite friends & family to, because there’s lots of time to visit after.

And because it’s a PTSA event, there is a reception and treats afterwards. Thank you Teresa Pates for volunteering to chair this event for our seniors and families.

Prom & Graduation

These are truly the “main events” for our students. Both are sponsored by the school, and paid for out of the funds raised by our students (ASB) throughout their high school years. Money made by selling class sweats & putting on events such as Homecoming go toward both Prom and Graduation. Our ASB officers will be sponsoring two dances this upcoming year to help fund prom and graduation.

The ASB advisor for the class of 2011 is Suzi Golden. She has been working with our ASB officers for the last 3 years. The ASB officers have great plans for Senior year! Thank you Suzi!

Graduation
As long as I have been at Newport the graduation ceremony has been held at Meydenbauer Center. Meydenbauer Center is really a nice place for our graduation – it’s close by, it accommodates guests in wheelchairs, and has enough space for our crowd. With all the levels of the building it does present a challenge for families to gather and take pictures before your student changes clothes and checks in for Grad Knight. (If you have any questions about other venues, feel free to ask me. Each one has significant drawbacks.)

Tickets: Our class is quite large, so we are not likely to get unlimited tickets per student. Each student gets 4 tickets. Additional tickets require filling out a form and we will pay for extras (approximately $5 per ticket). Just want you all to be prepared.

Graduation features two student speakers (one student-selected & one staff-selected) and two faculty speakers chosen by the students. Students chosen to perform musically are selected in an audition held in the Spring of Senior year. They all do an excellent job. The ceremony is MC’d by the Senior Class President and student names are announced by the Senior Class officers.

Few students attend a graduation until they are graduating, and they approach the ceremony with a vast array of emotions, ranging from tremendous glee to serious appreciation for the gravity of the occasion. What I’m trying to say is that they (or at least several of them) quite understandably don’t know how to behave. They manage fairly well despite their excitement.

Students who have earned a GPA of 3.5 or above wear honor cords (gold cords) around their necks. Students who have earned scores of 3 or better on at least three AP courses wear AP capes (sort of a gold collar). Note that since scores aren’t available by graduation, these scores have to have been earned by the end of Jr. year.

The printed program shows which students were ranked in the top 5% of the class, which had GPA’s of 3.5 or above, which had AP capes, and which were in Spanish Immersion, A separate handout lists the awards, honors, and scholarships earned by students (see Senior Awards Night).

Wherever graduation takes place, it’s crowded and there is very little time to visit with your graduate immediately after the ceremony as they must change clothes, give you all their stuff and get checked-in for Grad Knight. So be prepared for some quick pictures and good bye's.

We will have the graduation date confirmed very soon and I will let you know as soon as I know. (Tentative date is June 13th)

Prom
Our Senior Class officers will do almost all the planning for the Prom. They’ll do all the footwork to choose a suitable venue (based on what they can afford!) and make all other arrangements.

Newport’s administration actively keeps the cost of tickets low to ensure that price is not a barrier to attendance. The Activities office also keeps a supply of formal gowns on hand for students who are not able to purchase a dress. Any student who needs financial help with the costs of prom can talk with a counselor about options. This year the tickets were $45.

Prom 2011 is historically the first Saturday in June. I will keep you informed once the date is set. The venue is usually a closely guarded secret until close to the actual date.

Senior Awards Night

Every year Newport’s graduating class includes dozens of scholarship winners and academic achievers who deserve special recognition. The school could truly spend days honoring them all, but some of you might not have time for that. Instead, we have a lovely evening of awards. Students who will be honored are invited to attend. There is often a musical performance.

This is a school-sponsored event. Honorees are listed in the final edition of the Knightline each year. They cover pages!!

Some honors are scholarships that students have applied for. Information about these scholarships comes from Sally Owen in the Counselors’ office at Newport. I will keep you informed of deadlines for scholarships as best I can.

There are two awards that are given automatically to students who have earned them:
- The President’s Education Award is given to all students who have earned a 3.5 GPA or higher AND attained an SAT score in the 85th percentile or higher. One hundred sixty-three students in the Class of 2010 earned this honor.
- “Washington State Honors” which is bestowed on students who finish in the top 10% of all Washington students for the year based on GPA and SAT/ACT scores.

Senior Edition of Knightlife

The June edition of the student newspaper, Knightlife, is devoted to seniors. There are pictures, ABC Awards, stories and where everyone is going to college. This issue of the paper is not budgeted for in the student newspaper budget, so the class must fund it out of ASB funds, or wherever else they can scrounge up about $1,000. They usually think about it in May, when their options are very limited. If you know of a way to solve this problem, contact a senior class officer. They would be grateful, but don’t know it yet.

Senior Pictures/Portraits

If you are planning on having a senior portrait done of your graduate, you will need to arrange this with the studio of your choice. The pictures will be for your mantel, your grandparents, and possibly your graduation announcements. They won’t be included in the student section of the Yearbook. The picture used for this is the one taken on Check in day or Picture Makeup day by Dorian, this year’s yearbook company. Costs for senior portraits can range from $300-$700 depending on studio and what you want as far as packages offered. Many studios offer early bird deals in June & July.

There will be an option available to buy a “baby ad” in the back of the yearbook. These are quarter and half page ads that parents use as an opportunity to run their favorite baby picture and sometimes the senior portrait. You can put in a personal note to your child as a memory. The deadline to submit this has not yet been finalized, but will probably be in November/December. These ads prices can range from $50-$250.

Several studios ask students to be “reps”. They then ask those students to give them the names and addresses of everyone they know, and in return they get a free portrait or something. If a student uses that studio, and says they were referred by the rep, then they often get free wallets or some other freebie. It is all a private arrangement between the students and the studios. The school is not involved in any way. A word of caution: we have discovered that the way some reps were getting names of all their friends, and of the entire senior class, was to go through the PTA Directory and copy down names and addresses. The problem? It is an illegal use of the Directory.

Graduation Expenses (Cap & Gown/Announcements)

Jostens is the company that works with Newport for graduation. They offer cap & gown packages as well as announcements and invitations. Cap & gown packages range from approximately $36 - $91. Announcements can range from $13 - $65 with additional expenses if you order foil name cards, labels, inserts etc. Some students also order class rings through Jostens. The average student order is about $120.

Each grad purchase a red gown and the cap/tassel. If you previously purchased a gown for a sibling, you may re-use it (or borrow a neighbors). They iron beautifully.

Teen Parties
Just how much do you know about the parties your teen is going to? The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse found that 80% of parents don’t believe there teens are at parties where drugs and alcohol are present. That’s not what our teens are saying. In fact, 50% of teen partygoers attend parties where drugs and alcohol are present. Telling them your job is to help them learn to be safe is not the same as telling them you don’t trust them. Talk to the hosting parents ahead of time and ask them directly if alcohol, drugs or tobacco will be allowed at the party. Set a curfew and greet them when they come home. Create a safety plan with them so that they or someone else driving under the influence can make it home alive that night.

2010-2011 Schedules

On Wednesday, June 16th we will be handing out schedules to students for the 2010-2011 school year.

Please note that this will be your student’s preliminary class schedule. The final schedule will be provided at the start of the school year. Every attempt has been made to honor requests for elective classes. When this was not possible, an alternate was used. If your student did not select alternates during the scheduling process or the alternates they selected did not fit, an elective class was chosen that would fit into their schedule. In some cases, your student’s schedule may be missing a class period. We will be working over the summer to fill this hole and to complete your student’s schedule by Back-to-School Days. (Wednesday Aug 18th for 11th & 12th grades and Thursday, Aug 19th for 9th and 10th grades)

Please also note that the only course corrections that will be considered to this schedule are those regarding inaccurate level placements and readjustments needed due to summer school completion. The order of periods may change due to class size balancing prior to the start of school.

Eric Dawes, PTSA President - Join us for the last "family-focused" PTSA meeting
We encourage you to attend our May 26th, Wednesday night meeting – at 7:00 pm in the NHS Library -- WITH your students as we discuss the status of risky behaviors at Newport. With Graduation and summer approaching, this is a good opportunity to talk about what temptations are available to Newport students with regard to drinking, substance availability -- even holding those "I'd rather they drink at my house than somewhere else" parties. Drug Intervention Counselor Scott Sturdivan and Bellevue Police Resource Officer Greg Mills will be on hand to help with our awareness of what happens on and near our own campus. It's not a lecture -- we hope it's a chance for you to learn the facts which you can use at home to further the discussion should you choose to do so. We'll even have a cash door prize drawing for the students who donate an hour of their time.

The second agenda item of our meeting is recognizing the extraordinary volunteers who have stepped up this year. We hope you can be there to express your appreciation for the work they do to make Newport that much better.

Message to Parents: YOUR WORDS, ACTIONS COUNT
It is essential for parents to recognize that their words and actions count when it comes to substance abuse discussions. Dr. Phillippe Cunningham, Research Scientist at the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Medical University of South Carolina, explains, "Kids who are close to their parents are less likely to engage in a whole host of risky behaviors, including drug and alcohol abuse."

Initiate conversations about drugs and why they're harmful during the course of normal activities. Use blocks of time such as after dinner, before bedtime, before school, or on the drive to or from school and extracurricular activities. Talk with your kids each day after school. Know what they are involved in, who their friends are, and help them manage their free time. Parental involvement is an extremely powerful drug prevention measure. Your teens may be pressing for independence, but the truth is they need to hear from you and want you involved in their lives. Feel comfortable with your words and saying things like, "I would be very disappointed if you started using drugs or if you even tried them once," or "I love you and I want the best for you, so I hope you won't try any drugs." Give honest answers to tough questions, and do not make up what you do not know.

Baccalaureate Reception, Sunday June 13th 2:00-3:00 p.m.
- I need 20 people to bake 2 dozen cookies

Cookies need to be dropped off at 1:30. Parent volunteers will need to be there at 1:30 to set-up until approximately 4:00.

Graduation, Monday June 14th at Meydenbaur
- Door Guards (prior to Graduation 4:45 - 7:00 p.m. ) - 6 parents are needed to guard the doors into the auditorium at Meydenbauer before we open the doors to the public. Volunteers would need to be in place around 4:45 p.m. We have the band students arrive around 5:00 and have sound checks for speakers and performers at 5:00. Parents need to guard the doors to make sure that other people don’t get into the auditorium. Once the doors open they would help the Honor Society students take tickets and pass out programs until graduation starts at 7:00. Knight Valor Assembly
The Knight Valor Assembly is on Tuesday, May 18 at 9:00 am. Parents of students that will be receiving this recognition should have received a letter of invitation from PTSA to this event. If you plan to attend, please plan to arrive 15 minutes early (parking is very difficult – safest bet is the old Mervyn’s lot, which isn’t as far as you think) and plan to stay for the reception in the commons afterwards. The assembly itself will last about an hour.

Clothes for Kids
Overlake Service League is excited to announce that we have expanded our Clothes for Kids back to school clothing voucher program starting this year. We are now able to provide vouchers through high school rather than up to the age of 15. We want families with children in schools without Family Connection Centers to know about this opportunity - especially those at the high school level. Anyone who does not receive an Early Bird appointment in the schools has the opportunity to call the Overlake Service League office starting June 1st to get their name on a list for an in-home appointment for both Clothes for Kids vouchers and Holiday Program sign ups.

School Supplies
Students that qualify for free/reduced lunch may be eligible to receive free school supplies. Congregations for Kids, made up of Bellevue congregations and area organizations, are donating supplies. To apply, please stop by the main office and see Mrs. Caufield to pick up an application form. Forms must be returned by May 28th. The form is easy to fill out and all information is strictly confidential.

Junior Parent Volunteers Needed!

Baccalaureate 2010 - Sunday, June 13th 2-3 p.m.
Helpers Needed at Baccalaureate. Another wonderful Senior Year tradition at Newport is the inspiring & uplifting Baccalaureate Ceremony, which this year will be held in the Newport Theater. Junior parents are needed to help with the reception afterwards. This is a great way to see how the ceremony works and decide if you want to get involved next year. Volunteers needed for the following:
Set-up the cookies, water, punch at 1:30
Serve cookies, punch etc.
Donate cookies
Donate cases of water
Punch - looking for anyone that might have access to punch bowls (maybe through your church) that we might borrow
Clean-up around 4:00
I have had two responses from parents to help, yet not to coordinate the volunteers. I will find the volunteers to bring cookies and other donations. We would love to have a "Reception Chairperson". Please email me if you can help with any of these volunteer needs!

Grad Knight Bus Transportation - coordinating bus sign-ups for Grad Knight. Students who have paid for the party and signed their permission slip get to choose the bus they will ride in for Grad Knight. This is a big deal for the students and is really fun. The girl’s Varsity Golf Team culminated their successful season by winning the 4A District Championship last week. Not only that, five golfers qualified for the state tournament next week in eastern Washington and the team is on record for having the lowest match team total score in the history of Kingco Girl’s Golf. Junior parent needed to coordinate the reception following Baccalaureate 2010
Baccalaureate is senior class event sponsored entirely by Newport's PTSA. Baccalaureate is an inspirational, uplifting, and often very moving presentation that celebrates where students have been and where they are going. Students are invited to speak and perform music of their own choosing. Attendance is optional for students & their families. And because it's a PTSA event, there are treats afterwards. The Baccalaureate Chair for the Class of 2010 is looking for a junior parent to coordinate the "treats" and volunteers for this event scheduled for Sunday, June 13th. The ceremony is 2-3 pm. Volunteers are also needed to bake cookies, provide punch, set-up, serve and clean-up. Please contact me if you are interested and can help coordinate this celebration!

New WaNIC (formerly NEVAC) Summer Skills Academy 2010
Summer school classes are now available for the following subjects: Mobile Electronics, Radio Station Operations, Computer Graphics, Computer Essentials, Beginning Photography, Bellevue Film School, Intro to Video Game Programming, Intro to 3D Animation, Intro to Robotics, and Forensics. Austin Davis finished in first place in both Round #1 (out of 136 students) and Round #2 (out of 216 students) in Bellevue College's AMATYC Student Mathematics League competitions. Austin competed as an Advanced Calculus student enrolled in the BC "College in the High School" Program. The top five scorers will represent BC at the national level.

Blaine Lints hopes to run at least 130 miles in 24 hours at the University of Washington's Relay for Life on May 22 and 23. Blaine will be raising money for the American Cancer Society. To support his efforts go to blainelints.com

Just a few things to be aware of with school starting on Monday!

AP Bubbling
All students taking an AP exam must pick up an AP Booklet of information and test stickers, and fill in their answer sheets with their vital information (name, address, etc.). This will be happening after school on Monday, April 12, Tuesday, April 13, Wednesday, April 14 (at 12:30) and Monday, April 19. If you are not able to make one of these sessions, contact Ms. Suppes at the front desk or your counselor.

AP Exams
AP Testing (including Mock tests) will be from May 3rd to May 14th.

AP Proctors
Parents interested in being a proctor for an AP Exam, It is that time of year again! AP testing is from May 3rd to May 14th. Let Janet know which tests you might be interested in proctoring. Remember, you can’t proctor a test that your child is taking. And getting a friend to sign up with you is encouraged! Please contact Janet Suppes, suppesj@bsd405.org..

HSPE Testing
The Math and Science portions of the HSPE (formerly WASL) will be given on Tuesday, April 13 (Math) and Thursday, April 15 (Science), starting at 7:30. Regular classes start at 10:30. Students can attend the AP Seminars and the Library will be open at 7:30 for Independent Study.

Grad Knight 2011 Meeting
Next meeting is Monday, April 19th 6:30-8:00 in the library. We should have new information to report on venue choices, updates on Fundraising and making plans for the website to go live late June. It is really important that we get as many people that are interested in volunteering to this meeting as possible. Please join us!

Bellevue School's Foundation Spring For Schools Luncheon
BSF's annual Spring For Schools Luncheon is on May 27th, at 11:30. Janet Suppes will be putting together a table with Newport PTA parents. It is one of the big events of the school year. About a thousand people from all over Bellevue come, and lunch is provided. You will get to listen to what terrific programs BSF offers, and hear stories from our students about how these programs have changed their lives. Donations are requested, but you can decide how much you feel comfortable giving. So, come join your neighbors in supporting an organization that has been integral to the success of Bellevue schools. District Budget Meetings

The district has hosted several meetings, but we would like to host one for parents that speak another language than English. Interpreters will be present for Korean, Mandarin, Japanese, and Spanish. The PAAC worked really hard to assembly interpreters and this was the only time they could get people and a space.

Final Community Meeting: Interlake High School on Wednesday, March 24th, at 6:00-8:00 p.m. Those on the Fiscal Advisory Committee learned a lot at the last meeting at Sammamish. FAC heard the concerns about various plans, and the possible consequences. Go to have your questions answered! You can also go to the bsd405.org website to see the updated notes. The Superintendent and Cabinet have been keeping track of all the questions, and trying to get them answered as best they can.

1. Read the list of options on the Reference Guide taking into account the district's goals and mission. Consider which items are the most important to YOU to meet the goals and mission and which are less critical: http://bsd405.org/Portals/0/Departments/Budget/2010 2011 Budget/Reference Guide on Possible Budget Reductions and or Revenue Increases.pdf. Each item on the Reference Guide has points attached to it. One point represents $100,000. Since our goal is to propose reductions to fit the worst-case scenario of $6 million, you will need to identify items whose points together add up to 60. You may choose to make a partial cut for an item and use only half of the points assigned to it. This doesn't change the fact that, ultimately, you must cut 60 points.

2. Once you have made your decisions, please transfer your points to the interactive Input Form and submit via e-mail: http://bsd405.org/Portals/0/Departments/Budget/2010 2011 Budget/Input Sheet Fillable.pdf. Your total points must add up to at least 60 in order to submit.

BSD Budget - Community Meetings

I attended the first of three Budget meetings presented by the district at Newport on Thursday evening. I was impressed with the information and the NEED for our feedback in the form of a survey. The superintendent and her cabinet led the meeting and were very open with information and answering questions. I recognized many teachers and other administration from Newport as well as PTA, yet was disappointed with the parent turnout. So with that said here are some choices that we are faced with:

Do we increase athletic fees to $100-$200 per participant?
Do we eliminate swimming, golf, wrestling, and gymnastics?
Do we cut the 7 period day at the middle schools?
Should class sizes increase by 1 in all high school classes, and cut 17 teachers?
Does the district eliminate librarians, specialists, band and/or art at the elementary schools?

I would like you to KNOW and CONSIDER the following:

Budget cut decisions have NOT been decided.
Not only cuts are being considered. There will be revenue options to consider as well.
BSD has a "Your Input Form" on their website. Continue to ask questions and provide input even if your issues/questions are not on the survey.
The Superintendent and her committee are available for input and feedback at the meetings.
The district WANTS to hear from the community. Take the survey on-line www.bsd405.org. IF you are unable to take the survey on-line, you can stop by the school and get a paper copy.
The district has asked for input from all parties (curriculum, transportation, nutrition services, classified, teachers, admin., etc) PRIOR to these meetings. The cuts that you will see in the survey represent this.
Some of the decisions will involve BEA and union consideration.
Bellevue Schools Foundation funding is moving from small teacher grants to more systemic funding that helps more teachers/students. This does represent how the district allots some of the funding from BSF (for example for special grants that BSD uses for ILT (training that is funded by a grant from BSF that is not on the potential cut list).
The survey asks you to review budget cuts that represent the worst case scenario of $6 million dollars. Hopefully it will be less than that. Each of the items under consideration have a point value. You have to come up with 60 points (or more) overall. This information will then be prioritized by the Fiscal Advisory Committee and presented to the District.
As you consider the "potential" cuts, think about the district mission and what is best for all students.
The on-line survey will close March 25th.
The Financial Advisory Committee will prioritize the result of the survey and any additional input provided on the "Your Input Form"
The 7 period day and why that is not on the cutting block for high school - 23.5 credits are needed for graduation. Allows for some cushion for those students that need to get credit for classes as well as allow for students to focus on a particular course study (class or AP). 5 periods are funded by the state, 2 periods funded by BSD

Call to Action- How can you make a difference:

You can either sit on the sidelines, and let others make those decisions for you, or you can jump in and have your voice be heard!
Attend one of the community meetings, March 18 and March 24
March 18: Community Information Session, 5 p.m. - 7 p.m., Sammamish High School Library
March 24: Community Information Session, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m., Interlake High School Library
You will hear a presentation by the superintendent and her staff and have a chance to ask questions. Then you will have the opportunity to review the survey, ask more questions from the superintendent's cabinet, discuss with others, and finally vote your choices- whether you do it that evening or on-line. You decide how to cut $6 million from the budget
If you don't attend a meeting - Big disadvantage: if something doesn't make sense, there is no one to ask.
Continue to make your suggestions for cuts or opportunities to raise revenue. These won't be part of the survey, but they will be reviewed and considered by the Fiscal Advisory Committee.
The Fiscal Advisory Committee will then take all of this information prioritize (rank-ordered) recommendation of how the district cuts the budget. The meeting is open for observation. Check the website for details.

BSD Budget - FAC meetings

As you may have heard, the district has formed a Fiscal Advisory Committee (FAC) to take part in gathering information, analyzing data, and making recommendations on district budget cutting priorities for the 2010-11 school year. Because the cuts the district needs to make will likely impact our school and our educational system as a whole, I urge you to attend any of the following community meetings to ask questions and submit your input.


• March 11: Community Information Session, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m., Newport High School Library
• March 18: Community Information Session, 5 p.m. - 7 p.m., Sammamish High School Library
• March 24: Community Information Session, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m., Interlake High School Library

Here are some notes from the BSd Financial Advisory Committee - Parent Communications:

Our Curriculum Tech Coaches and Curriculum Developers are funded by the Tech fund. The district currently has 19-20 of these employees. If they were moved back into the classroom, they would have to be paid out of the General Fund - and they would displace other teachers. Many people who gave early feedback thought cutting them would be a great way to solve the budget problem - but it could actually make it worse.
Here's a tidbit about the Transportation fund: Money in the Transportation Fund can be used to purchase buses, but money to operate the buses must come out of the General Fund.
When the BSD builds a new school, the law allows money from the Capital Projects Fund to be used to purchase new furniture, new textbooks, and new equipment for the new building. This is why new schools are usually outfitted with the latest and greatest desks while older buildings continue to use older items.
The BSD works with 6 types of funding. We'll focus on the largest of these, the General Fund. The others: Technology Fund (from the local tech levy), the Building Fund (from our local Bond and the State), the Transportation Fund (from the Transp Levy and the State), our Debt Service fund, which helps pay interest on our bonds, and ASB funds, which belong to the students but which the BSD must monitor.
Did you know.....the State can't tell us yet how much money we will have in the 2010-2011 school year? Once they determine the amount to be allocated to our district, then that amount determines the amount of Levy funds we can collect (regardless of what our generous voters have authorized). Makes budgeting tricky.

Girls State Basketball tickets will be sold One Day Only at Newport HS in the Commons.
Sale: Tuesday March 2, during both lunches and after school until 4:00 pm
What: 1 day tickets for Wednesday, 3/3 and Thursday, 3/4 games at the Tacoma Dome.
Cost: Adults $10/day, Students $8/day

Anyone wishing to attend the Girls State Basketball Tournament at the Tacoma Dome must check out through the Attendance Office following normal procedures. This will not be necessary on Wednesday, March 3, as our opening game against Kentwood is at 3:30 pm.

BSD-Fiscal committee begins work

Last evening the district’s new Fiscal Advisory Committee met for the first time, two days after we received this disturbing announcement from the State Superintendent for Public Instruction: Today, the leadership in the state House of Representatives and Senate released their supplemental fiscal year 2010 budgets. In 1994, the state’s per pupil spending was $3,707, adjusted for inflation. The state Senate’s proposed budget for 2010 is $3,815 per student, just $108 per student more than 16 years ago and down $311 from 2007. Because the budget reductions will impact our entire school system, plan to attend one of three community budget meetings to hear an overview of our current financial situation; learn where Bellevue stands compared to other school districts in terms of staffing and spending patterns; and have an opportunity to identify your priorities from among various cost savings and revenue-generation strategies.

Jamba Juice Fundraiser for the Senior Class
We have 3000 swipe cards to be distributed to students, parents, and other supporters of our PTSA. Every time a card is swiped at the time of purchase, 10% of the proceeds are applied to our PTSA and 2% to the National PTA. Donations are paid on a quarterly basis through-out the year. College Planning Day 3/25 at Bellevue College
The Washington Council for High School – College Relations and Bellevue College are pleased to announce College Planning Day at the BC main campus. This is an opportunity for your high school students to hear from representatives from universities and colleges in Washington. Bellevue College will host approximately 22 college representatives; each rep will give four information sessions so that students have an opportunity to hear from a variety of institutions. The date for the planning day on the BC campus will be Thursday, March 25, 2010 from 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 noon. Sophomores, juniors, and undecided seniors are welcome to attend this informative event. NHS Students can attend this event with permission from parents submitted to the attendance office.

Students will see a web page with the title College Planning Day and a gray button that says “Registration,” they should click that button to create a unique profile and get started. From there students will be able to select sessions from four drop-down menus. They will receive a confirmation by email. Grad Knight 2011 has been fundraising for two years now. Parents have been asked to make a small contribution, buy a beach towel and/or attend a wine tasting event. In many cases, parents/families so far on average, have donated $105 to date. If you have not participated in Grad Knight 2011 fundraising so far, please consider your first gift today.

Any small contribution that can be made now will help keep the cost considerably less per student. We are hoping that every family can contribute in some way and we are spreading it out to make it easier to do so.

Whether or not George Washington really said it or not, it is true that the Grad Knight 2011 President’s Day Fundraising Drive has begun.

Grad Knight (or Senior Party) is 100% sponsored, financed, planned and executed by the Grad Knight Committee of Newport's PTSA (parents!) Grad Knight is a safe, well supervised, memorable, all-inclusive, all-night party immediately following graduation. The event runs for almost 24 hours, is drug and alcohol free and includes: all transportation to one or more venues, food, entertainment, photographs and more!

We are trying to keep prices down and fundraising to a minimum. So in honor of President’s Day, we are asking you to consider making a donation today. Benefit for Newport Jazz Band

Here is an extraordinary opportunity to enjoy great Jazz. Ariel Pocock, a member of Newport’s Jazz I band, will be performing with her trio in a concert with the Eastside Jazz Club. Ariel won the Ella Fitzgerald Outstanding Vocalist and Outstanding Pianist Award at the Essentially Ellington competition in New York City. Proceeds from this concert will benefit the band program at Newport High School. The concert will be held Tuesday, February 9th at Sherman Clay Music Store. The event begins at 7:30 pm. Newport High School will host its annual All-School Parent Night on Thursday, February 11th, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. Parents of current 11th graders (12th in 2010-2011) will meet in the library. Spring Sports Update

Spring Sports Packets are available in front of Mrs. Jones, the ASB Secretary’s Office. If your student played a sport this year, pick up a return packet (Orange) or if this is the first time trying out for a sport, pick up the Gray Folder Packet. All packets are due back by February 26^th. Do not forget that you will need to pay a transportation fee of $25.00 before handing in your packets (with the exception of Girls Water Polo).

Track: Thursday, February 4th all interested track athletes shoul meet for a brief informatinal meeting in the commons at 3:10 p.m.
Fastpitch Softball: Starting today, Newport Fastpitch will be holding open fields all students this spring. Meet at the field on Tuesdays and Fridays from 3:10 to 4:00.
Newport Baseball: This year's meeting for players and parents is being held on Wednesday, February 10th at 7pm in the school library. This is a MANDATORY meeting for both returning and rookie players and parents. Our supply of Newport gear is in a bit of disarray with the recent changes, but there may be some items available for sale at the meeting. Bring your checkbook just in case! PTSA Council Scholarships- These are for Seniors yet I wanted you to see what scholarships are available:

The Bellevue PTSA Council is offering two $1,000

scholarships for each Bellevue high school:

• The Michael Riley Scholarship: for well-rounded students with outstanding academic credentials.

• The Alice Hurd Memorial Scholarship: for exceptional volunteerism based on community service,

with a minimum of 500+ hours to qualify.

• Bellevue Parks Scholarship ($1,000): for a graduating senior who has demonstrated a passion for the outdoors and can express the value Bellevue’s outstanding parks & programs contribute to the quality of life in this city. The recipient will have a focus on the environment, earth sciences or recreation leadership.

Parenting Series

New parenting series that Y.E.S. is offering to parents of children with ADD/ADHD. In eight sessions, this class will offer valuable information and support to parents who are experiencing the challenges of parenting a child with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Please see the attached flyer for more details, and feel free to share it with parents who may be interested in attending. College Planning Day at Bellevue College: The Washington Council for High School – College Relations and Bellevue College are pleased to announce College Planning Day at the BC main campus. This is an opportunity for your high school students to hear from representatives from universities and colleges in Washington State on the benefits of attending their institutions. Bellevue College will host approximately 22 college representatives; each rep will give four information sessions so that students have an opportunity to hear from a variety of institutions. The date for the planning day on the BC campus will be Thursday, March 25, 2010 from 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 noon. Sophomores, juniors, and undecided seniors are welcome to attend this informative event.
NHS Students can attend this event with permission from parents submitted to the attendance office.

Tyee Middle School is looking for one to two junior or senior students who are strong in math and personality to do a short term 1:1 tutoring for an 8^th grade boy who has missed half of the first semester due to illness. Hours are from 2:30 – 3:18 so you would have to have open 7^th period. (2/2)

A message from our Prevention/Intervention Specialist

The second week of February is recognized as National Children of Alcoholics (COA) Week – a time to increase our knowledge about how the disease of addiction impacts the children of addicted parents. One in four students under the age of 18 are living with a family member who is impacted by drug or alcohol use. Children of addicted parents are more at risk for alcoholism and other drug abuse than are other children. They exhibit symptoms of depression and anxiety more often, and can have increased difficulties in school with both academics and behavior. Contact your school counselor, prevention intervention specialist, your physician or visit www.nacoa.org for more information.
