Back To School News

Feeling a bit overwhelmed with all of the information that we just received in the fall packets? Thanks to Audrey and Janet, they have provided me with some helpful information to get you through the Freshman Check-In Day. If you have not received your back to school packet, please contact the office as soon as possible. If you have any other questions, please feel free to email or call.

Link Crew Orientation – August 22nd at 1 p.m.

This is a not-to-be-missed event for your student! They will be assigned to a Link Leader, who are all Jr. and Sr. students chosen for their enthusiasm, people skills, and leadership abilities. Each Link Leader gets 10-12 freshman students to work with throughout the first semester. They will take them through the building, answer questions, and encourage the freshmen to get to know one another.

Freshman Back-to-School Day – August 23rd 8:00 a.m.

• They won’t close up until all the kids are done.
• Most kids navigate this successfully on their own. It’s set up to cater to your average 9th grader, and all the volunteers are parents.
• All forms in this packet can be returned at Back-to-School day. Everything is set up so that it’s very obvious where they go. A volunteer will be there to help kids who can’t figure it out.
• The reason students are asked to come in at different times is to help minimize waiting in long lines.
• Yes, you can have your student go through with another grade, if necessary. But they’ll have way more fun with the other 9th graders.
• Depending on wait times, it takes about 30 minutes to get through all the stations. But the Freshmen really like seeing each other and showing off their picture day outfits, so you might want to allow longer if you’re arranging a pick-up time.
• Students may go to the stations in any order – so if there’s a long line for pictures, they can head out to the gym for their bus pass or schedule and return to the picture line afterwards.
• In order to receive a Metro pass, your student must bring the Metro pass form signed by parent/guardian and student (those students that qualify for a metro pass received this information from the transportation department).
Summary of checks to give your student – more information below:
• ASB/Annual
• Transportation fee - $20 per sport
• Dorian (pictures)
• Lunch accounts, if you’re not paying on-line at paypams
• Classroom fees - Science fee
• Payment for Frosh sweats
• A note about the annual – if you plan to buy one, do it now. Last year the stock on hand sold out very quickly. Pre-ordering is safest.

Fall Packet Info – helpful tips!!!
Yes, you should read every single word! This is an incredible source of information for all parents. Here’s a summary of the info in the packet organized by how you write your check….

School stuff – these items can be put on one check as they all go to “Newport High School.”
· ASB Cards - $45
· Activity/Athletic Transportation Fee - $20 per quarter
· Annual - $55
· Classroom Fees – vary according to subject

Pictures – checks for pictures should be made out to Dorian. Prices vary.

Bellevue Schools Foundation – the green form is for donations to our Schools Foundation, which funds district-wide initiatives. If you donate before October 10, you won’t get a phone call from the Foundation during the phonathon!

Freshman Sweats - Great way to get some school colors into the wardrobe. Sweats for the Freshmen are designed by the Senior Class, and proceeds go into their fund for Prom & Graduation. (Our kids will get the money for the sweats for the class of 2115.) When they are Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors they get the proceeds from their own sales, and of course have a little more say in what they look like.

PTSA Stuff that needs payment – please write separate checks (all made out to “Newport PTSA”) for these items. They are all processed by volunteers who *really* appreciate your help. Best bet is to staple your check to the form.
· Tile Flyer – you’ll see the first batch of tiles mounted in the courtyard soon. We expect to sell lots of tiles when the school holds public tours so if you want one, please order soon using this salmon/peach form.
· PTSA Membership Form – Our PTSA has the highest membership in Bellevue, with over 800 members. Many high schools in neighboring districts have as many members as they have students…..could we do that? I think we could!! Members receive a free student directory and the satisfaction of knowing they belong to one of the only advocacy organizations that supports children. Member benefits can be found at www.pta.org by clicking on About PTA and then Benefits of Membership.
· Classroom Bucks – Every year we raise money at Newport that we then give to our teachers in the form of grants. You can choose to donate by returning this form on Check-In day, by mailing it in at your convenience, or by donating on Open House night. Thanks very much for your generosity!

PTSA Stuff that doesn’t need payment – still vital, of course, but no check required….
· Volunteer Form –please do return this hot-pink form with your interests marked. We will then contact you only for the jobs that you actually want to do.
· Language flyer –we added a flyer with some helpful info in Korean and Chinese that explains each form. We are investigating the problem with the Chinese side, which occurred at the PTSA end. Debbie provided us with a flawless translation and we messed it up!
· Directory Changes – Our PTSA uses name and address information provided by the District for our Student Directory. If the information on your white “Profile Form” is correct, there’s no need to fill out the purple “Directory Changes” form. But if your Profile form is out of date, please fill out the purple form (AND the profile form!) so we can publish correct information. Many families choose to add the student’s cell phone number, which you can also do with the purple form.
· PTSA meetings – hope you can join us for one or two of these!
· Baccalaureate 2008 – Junior Parents usually help out with kitchen duty for Baccalaureate each year. If you want to help, please let Elaine know by filling out the hot pink form.
· Knight Valor – this yellow form tells you all you need to know about our community service program for students. If you are still finishing the 40 hours of required Community Service for the BSD, please fill out both forms.
· Ski Swap – This is a great way to give an hour or two of your time to our PTSA. No skiing experience required!!
