Spirit Week
This week is Winter Spirit Week! Monday-Twin Day, Tuesday – Celeb Look-A-Like day, Thursday – T-shirt day, Friday, - Red & Gold day. Dress up and show your spirit!
Tolo Info:
Tickets are on sale Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday during both lunches. Your child can either buy tickets on Monday and not stand in line, or wait until Thursday and spend the entire lunchtime in line. Homecoming sold out, so fair warning! Guest passes for Tolo are absolutely due on Wednesday at 3:15. No applications will be accepted after that. Help us avoid tearful students.
Does your daughter need a beautiful dress for Tolo? PDC has made MANY available. Come have a fitting Friday, Monday or Tuesday from 3 to 4 p.m. in the Clinic. Sign up in the Main Office.
Tolo Chaperones Needed: Contact Jennifer Gonsiorowski gonsiorowskij@bsd405.org if you are available on December 8th. Duties can include coat check, monitoring photo sessions, exits and entrances.
Adopt-a-Family November 28th- December 12th
NHS is partnering with Lake Heights YMCA to support families in need this holiday season. From now until December 12th, donations of money and canned food are being accepted in your students 2nd period class. The money will be used to buy gifts for the families such as warm coats, pajamas, and shoes. Any additional money collected will be put into a scholarship fund to help the families pay for rent, electric bills, child care, and other necessary expenses throughout the year. All canned food will be donated to Northwest Harvest Food Bank to help families in King County. If you are able to help, please send all donations with your student to their 2nd period class. The 2nd period class with the greatest combined total of food and money wins a prize!
Our goal is to raise $8000 dollars for the families! If each student donated $5, we would reach our goal!!! Thank you in advance for your help in making this a happy holiday season for deserving families in our area. Note: Tax ID number available upon request
Holiday Band Concerts
This year the band will present two holiday concerts. Tuesday, December 11th features Wind Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble and Jazz I. The second concert is Wednesday, December 12th features Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Percussion Ensemble and Jazz II.
Newport Marching Band has been invited to pay at the Seahawks vs. Raiders game on December 23rd. The band will be playing as part of the half-time show, choreographed to the band playing Winter Wonderland. NHS has been invited for the 3rd year in a row!
First Semester Finals
The schedule for Finals is in the Daily Bulletin. Given that the schedule has been published for quite some time, teachers will probably not be particularly sympathetic to students who miss a test because of travel plans or other activity planned during Finals. http://schools.bsd405.org/nhs/homepage/
Grades
By the way, did you get first quarter grades? They have been mailed. Final grades, which do count on a student’s transcript for GPA purposes, are based on the semester grade. The semester ends on January 25th.
AP Testing
AP test registration will take place December 12th. All students enrolled in an AP course are expected to take either the AP exam or the Mock AP exam in the spring. AP testing fees are $84.00 per test. Payment plans are available, and financial aid is available for those who qualify. Forms are available in the Main Office. Forms were distributed to students on Wednesday.
Yearbook
Has your student purchased a yearbook? Student ID numbers of those who have purchased one are posted at the Accounting office. Is it too late to buy one? Absolutely not! Please stop by and pay the accountant $55.00 to reserve your copy. Typically there are no annuals available for purchase when they arrive in late spring.

If you look in the courtyard, the bottom row has 4 class tiles for 2007, 2008, 2009 & 2010. Let’s get our first Class of 2011 tile this round. Any size donation is accepted. January 4th

This was an amazing effort by Don Meyer, Terri McDonald and Laurie Ombrellaro (Finance), Shirley Louie (Volunteers), Shannon Kahn and Linda Kosin (Food), and all those folks that Don talks into helping year after year, most of whom have no connection to Newport except for the Ski Swap!

Incidentally, your Freshman Liaison grew up in California, where the word "tolo" does not exist. Any dance where the girls asked the boys was called a "Sadie Hawkins" after the Li'l Abner character. Audrey Bennett found this explanation of Tolo at the Seattle Public Library Q&A page:

"The girl-dates-boy type of dance was introduced about 30 years ago [c1919] by members of Tolo Club, founded in 1909 as the upper-classwomen's activity and scholastic honorary to honor girls who had shown outstanding leadership and service to the University of Washington. The club was given the name of 'Tolo,' Indian word for 'achievement of success.'
The annual Tolo informal [dance] was changed to reverse dating procedure, became traditional at the University, and spread across the country carrying the name 'Tolo' with it." is a Chinook word meaning to win, earn, prevail, succeed, control, convince, overcome or triumph.

The facts - Tolo is a formal dance sponsored by Newport's Key Club. It goes from 9 p.m. to midnight at Newport on Saturday, December 8th.

Tickets will be on sale during both lunches the week of the dance, Monday, Tuesday & Thursday - December 3rd - December 6th. No tickets will be sold on Friday or at the door. The girls ask the boys. Boys often respond by giving the girl a flower or other item along with a note or some other response within a few days.

Girly stuff: Yes, many girls get their hair done. And yes, you will find that this costs $50 and more. Lower prices are available through beauty schools, but they fill up EARLY. Girls often get manicures/pedicures, particularly if they play a winter sport and have nasty broken nails. Some girls get their makeup done, but gosh that seems like overkill, don't you think? Let's keep in mind that the boys will, um, shower.
Pictures: It's common for the kids to gather at someone's house once they are all gussied up with all their associated parents for pictures & a little parent socializing. All the parents will be there. It is perfectly OK for you to be there. If your child says otherwise, he's wrong. Finances: While your student & his/her date can work out any arrangement they like, there are some conventions about who buys what. The girls buy/arrange day activities, dinner, the dance tickets, and a boutonniere. The boys handle transportation, pictures, dessert and the corsage.
Dinner: Very much like Homecoming Tolo groups eat at a variety of places so they aren't breaking the bank at fancy places.
At the Dance: Students are not allowed to leave & return, so don't leave anything in the car that you will need inside.

P.S .- I highly recommend making sure to call/email the parents of your child's date during the planning stages to share info or to discuss whatever your concerns or expectations may be . "Here's what I think is happening. What do you think is happening?" Get to know the parents of your child's friends!

Bus to Football Game in Vancouver – Payment Due Thursday!
Newport is playing in the 3A state football playoffs for the first time in over 10 years and it is an evening game in Vancouver, WA. As parents we are concerned about students driving to the game and home again late at night so the Newport Touchdown Club has reserved deluxe coaches to transport interested students and parents to the game.
KNIGHTS FOOTBALL ROOTER BUS TO VANCOUVER, WA THIS FRIDAY, NOV 2!
Parent / Student bus to the 3A State Playoff game leaves from Newport at 3:00 on Friday. Chaperones on board.
BRING YOUR MONEY TO THE NHS OFFICE THURSDAY, NOV 1st in an envelope with your name, seats required and phone number. Cash or check to Newport Touchdown Club. $10 Students or $20 for Adults.
Puget Sound Charter coaches will load right after school and leave on Friday at 3:00 pm from the NHS school parking lot. Game time is at 7:30 PM at Kiggin’s Bowl on the campus of Discovery Middle School. After the game the bus will load and drive directly back to NHS for parent pick up. We expect the arrival at NHS to be between 12:30 and 1:00 am.
Bring a sandwich/waters for dinner as we are driving directly to the game.
NO ALCOHOL/Soft Drinks/GUM or soft Candy
Backpacks will be inspected at the bus.

Newport will be playing in the preliminary round of the State football tournament. We play Columbia River of Vancouver on Friday, November 2 @ 7:30 p.m. And if Newport wins their next game will be against (you’ll love this)……Bellevue.
Looks pretty easy to find – just west of exit 5 from I-5. The address for Columbia River High School is 800 NW 99th Street.

Come see the hilarious comedy Much Ado About Nothing - Nov. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, featuring a wonderful cast full of talent and surprises. This will be the first show in our new Performing Arts Center! Tickets are on sale during both lunches in front of the theatre doors for only $5 with ASB and $6 for adults.

Parent Study Strategies Workshop – Wed, Oct 17th

- Strategies for assisting your student with homework an school
- Covers very similar content as noted in the student workshop, yet geared toward parents’ assisting students and use of web curriculum.
- Previous workshops have resulted in rave reviews.
Super Wednesday – October 17th
Freshmen will report to the main gym at 7:30 for a variety of speakers and activities. Tutorial is available from 11:30 to 12:40
Volunteer Opportunity available
Volunteers are needed to make phone calls to voters to remind them to vote in this election. (The hope is that these calls will remind pro-education voters to get out & approve 4204, the Initiative for Simple Majority.) Callers won’t need to do anything other than remind these folks to vote – no political pushing or cajoling.
Calls will be made on the nights of 10/17 and 10/18 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Coldwell Banker offices on Bellevue Way & Main.
This is a great way for students to pick up two or even four easy hours of volunteer time, and of course we welcome parents, grandparents, or anyone else who wants to pitch in. Let me know if you are interested, so we have an idea of how many to expect. (Our PTSA has voted to endorse this campaign.)
Winter Sports Paperwork Due – November 2nd
Our winter sports folders are now ready! If you are interested in turning out for a winter sport please stop by and pick up an eligibility packet from the athletic office. (Gymnastics, Basketball, Wrestling and Boys Swimming)
A reminder to all fall sports participants - you still need to fill out a repeat eligibility form so we can clear you for your winter sport!!
Newport Ski Swap – Fri, Nov 9th – Sat, Nov 10th
The annual Newport Ski Swap is coming up Nov 9th & 10th. This is the coolest, most amazing, wonderful, special, fabulous PTSA
fundraiser in the universe.
- It offers thousands of people the chance to purchase ski/snowboard equipment at low cost.
- It offers hundreds of NHS students the chance to earn BSD & Knight Valor hours.
- It offers mostly new merchandise, unsold from last year.
- It offers people the chance to sell old gear on consignment (clear out your closet now!)
- It brings our community together like no other event we do.

The Bellevue School District is hosting a College Conference at Newport this Thursday, Oct 11 from 6:00 to 8:30. There will be three different sessions you can attend, with representatives from all aspects of the college process. It is for both students and parents. Leadership is looking for student volunteers at the College Conference! Come to the main office to sign up. The College Fair is Thursday, Oct 1th1 from 6:00 to 8:30 pm. The funds raised will pay for enhancements in our new building: a new electronic sign to display our NHS events and accomplishments, and a pit filler and orchestra clouds for the new theater so that our student musicians can shine!
A Grad Year Tile costs $200. So far our class has a $10 donation toward a tile. Donations are accepted in any amount until $200 is reached. If you look in the courtyard, the bottom row has 4 class tiles for 2007, 2008, 2009 & 2010. Let’s get our first Class of 2011 tile this round. Any size donation is accepted. Deadline is December 1st. Send checks to the school, Attn: Class of 2011 PTA Tile. No form necessary
If a family or individual want their own tile, go to the PTSA website www.newportptsa.org for a form.
Community Service Hours – BSD & Knight Valor
Bellevue School District requires 40 hours of Community Service to graduate. These forms are available in the main office (this is a 4-part form). Once your student has accumulated 40 hours all graduation requirement forms (one form per record of service) are turned in at the Counseling Office to Jan Hays.
Knight Valor is a PTSA sponsored program. We do not share our database with BSD. The 2007-2008 form and FAQ are available on the PTSA website www.newportptsa.org/. The Knight Valor form allows for multiple organizations/hours to be listed with a deadline for 2007-2008 in late April. Knight Valor is earned one time only and is given for the first 100 hours served. There is an assembly and reception in the spring (of the year that your student completes the 100 hours) where these recipients are honored and families are invited to attend.
The people who administer these programs (at the school district and our fabulous PTSA volunteers) find it more helpful and the job more manageable if the students accumulate hours instead of turning in sheets for ½, 1 or 2 hours per record. The students should start keeping track of their time served in the community on their own and then turn the forms in when they have 40 hours accumulated. Many students have already started to do this. Your student fills out both forms for the first 40 hours of service. Any additional hours (41-100) to meet the Knight Valor recognition program are filled out on the Knight Valor form. All forms must have a signature verifying hours served.
Have your student keep their forms in a file until they are ready to be turned in. I recommend that you keep a copy in a separate file as well.
