End of Semester News

As we are close to the end of the semester, I have attached the Junior Checklist for post-high school planning. I sent this out in the fall, yet many of us may need to be reminded or see it more than once. I also had a few questions from my "PSAT Results and More" email and I thought that I would share the answers with you. The answers were provided by Alicia Williams, NHS Counselor. Please read below under the section called College Corner.

College Corner
SAT & ACT Registration Q & A (answered by Alicia Williams, NHS Counselor)

Q - So many dates to choose from - how to determine which date is best for us? Is it better to test before AP -
after AP, before finals?
A - the best date is what works for the individual student with other responsibilities and time factors built in.
Most students take the ACT and the SAT in the spring of their junior year. I often suggest the June tests because a student has more school under his or her belt and they have completed the AP exams already.

Q - Do we need to have chosen colleges before taking the test?
(Both ACT and SAT will send 4 free reports to schools chosen before tests are graded, but that does not allow you to decide if you want that particular score to go out to that particular college).
A - I personally encourage students to send the 4 scores to the top 4 schools they are applying to even though
they have not seen the scores. If they don’t like the scores they are going to retake the tests anyway and send
new scores eventually. Colleges will look at the best scores in the bunch. Also, scores are not going to be
generally the tipping point in admissions for most kids

Q - Is it safe to wait until next fall to begin the testing process?
A - I generally encourage kids to start in the spring and retake in the fall if necessary.
Q -Is there anything else we're not thinking of that we should be considering?
A - Check out the college board and the ACT website for more tips and ideas.

Couch Needed

A big favor to ask of Newport parents!!! The counselors at Newport want to make the counseling center comfortable and homey for all students. They conducted a student survey and after tallying the results the top priority was a couch.

We are wondering if anyone might have a spare couch, or know of where we could find a donated one that is:

…new or gently used

…love seat size

…brown or black

…leather or faux leather

…no rips or tears

The students have also requested some magazines to look at while they wait for their appointment. We are looking for a donation of teen appropriate magazines, or a subscription for the Newport High School Counseling Center. Thanks for helping us make the Counseling Center a welcoming place for all students!
