Homecoming Info

I have been getting questions about Homecoming (so with some help from Audrey) here’s some Homecoming Info. I’m also adding a bit of housekeeping to this message.

If you are hearing from me for the first time, I’m your Class Liaison from Newport’s PTSA. I provide occasional timely messages with late-breaking news or information specific to our Freshman. To see past messages, visit
http://newport-ptsa-2011.blogspot.com/. Requests for removal are cheerfully honored.

I discovered that I have many email addresses for parents whose children don’t appear in the Newport Student Directory. This could be because you have asked not to appear in the directory, or because your student is not enrolled at Newport. If your student has moved to another school, don’t hesitate to let me know & I’ll remove you from the list.

I have email addresses for 330 families out of 400+ total in our class. If you know of anyone that should be receiving these emails, please forward them on and have them contact me. Thanks very much for your support!!

Julie Rooney
PTSA Liaison Class of 2011

This is pretty long, but covers everything regarding Homecoming Week. If you have a daughter, you've probably heard lots of talk. If you have a son, well, just make sure he knows that the girls *really* want to be asked.

Homecoming is the week of October 1 – 5th.

During the Week:
Each day, students & staff will dress to a particular theme. These are usually very silly, fun themes announced to the student body well in advance via announcements & posters in the hallway. It's not necessary to dress up, but most students (and many teachers!) do get into the act. The normal dress code does still apply. Competitions and activities occur at lunchtime in the cafeteria. Freshman Sweats will be distributed this week.

Hall Decorations:
On Thursday night, students decorate four areas in the school - one for each grade - using the themes assigned to their class. Your student may ask you to "lend" items for "hall decs" which may or may not survive the day. (I generally go in Friday afternoon to retrieve anything I've lent them.) On Thursday night, the students get quite warm, so one way to see what's going on is to stop by with a case of water or some snacks. The Freshman area is even more chaotic than the others as this is their first time "managing" a project of this magnitude. Resist the urge to manage it for them!!

On Friday morning, the halls are "judged" by a team of teachers, and the winners announced at the Homecoming Assembly Friday afternoon.

The Homecoming Assembly is the most spirited, goofy, fun assembly of the year. Please do not be alarmed when your student reports that many Senior boys showed up in Cheer or Drill uniforms for this assembly.

Friday night - October 5th - is of course the Homecoming Football game at 7:30 p.m. on the football field. A surprising number of recent grads do attend.

Homecoming Dance
Oh, and there's a dance on Saturday, October 6th - Freshman Theme – Aliens & Creatures

The facts:
This is a school sponsored activity that takes place from 9 p.m. to midnight at Newport. Studio pictures are taken beginning earlier in the day (to avoid having kids spend the whole dance standing in line).

Chaperones: If you would like to Chaperone, please contact JamesG@bsd405.org. Chaperones are given an overview of their duties before the dance.

The Ask: This is a "date" dance, though it's OK to attend alone. The vast majority of kids attend in a group. These kids don't simply pick up the phone to ask for a date......nooooo....first, there is extensive back-room planning (mostly on the part of the girls) to help everyone understand who is willing to go with whom. Then they perform elaborate rituals in both asking & answering. Scavenger hunts. Anonymous gifts left on the doorstep. Words on the Factoria Cinema sign. This is a boy-ask-girl dance.

Yes - a student can invite a high-school age student from another school. The student would need to fill out a form available in the office so that the staff knows who is here.

But EVERYONE goes! The Administration estimates that only 1/3 of students attend Homecoming. There are many, many parents at Newport who don't allow kids under 16 to date, so if that's your rule, too, you are not alone.

Activities: Many groups plan optional activities on Friday night or Saturday during the day. They carve pumpkins, go bowling, take a hike, bake a dessert for after the dance.

Pictures: After the kids are decked out in accordance with the theme, but before they go to Newport for the posed pictures, they often gather at one home with all their associated parents for pictures & a little parent socializing. All the parents will be there. It is perfectly OK for you to be there. If your child says otherwise, he's wrong.

Transportation: It's great when they form groups of SIX so that the group can fit neatly into a mini-van or SUV. Parent drivers are very common among freshmen & even sophomores.

Attire: Newport's Homecoming is meant to be for everyone, so it is not formal or semi-formal. It's more of a costume ball. The themes for each class, which dictate their hall decorations & dance clothing, are usually announced at the Fall Sports assembly in a video. The seniors get a cool, trendy theme and the Freshmen get a goofy, slightly embarrassing theme. And yes, students really do dress for the theme. Mixed-grade couples usually dress in the theme of the older student's class. The usual dress code still applies.

Dinner: Dinner-before-a-dance can be at the home of a friend whose mom is a wonderful cook. It is relaxing & fun & cheap! Their choice of restaurant is somewhat limited by the goofy clothes they'll be wearing, so it's unlikely they'll want to go to Canlis – more like Cucina! Cucina!

Dessert: This optional tradition has evolved over the years. The kids usually gather at one person's home after the dance (yes, it's after midnight now) to eat dessert & visit. So parents, plan on staying up late…

Finances: While your student & his/her date can work out any arrangement they like, there are some conventions about who buys what. The boys buy/arrange dinner & the dance tickets. The girls pay for pictures & dessert. No corsages/boutonnières for Homecoming.

After Dessert: Why, they go home, of course!

PS - By all means, call/email the parent of your child's date during the planning stages to share info. "Here's what I think is happening. What do you think is happening?"

Items of interest as fall activities begin...

  • Hello there Freshman Parents!! A bunch of items of interest as fall activities begin for real.....

    Julie Rooney
    PTSA Class of 2011 Liaison

P.S. - This message is going to the parents of the class of 2011. Requests
for removal from this list are cheerfully honored, no questions asked.
Questions are always welcome. I have email addresses for over half of our class,
so please share this with friends who aren't getting it.

    PTA Meeting
    Open House
    Yearbook submissions
    Tiles
    Daily Bulletin
    College Conference
    Study Skills Workshop
New Student Drop Off - east side of campus courtyard

    ----------------------------

    PTA Meeting
Here’s a good reason to come to our first meeting of the year: a sneak preview of the new Theater! We will be giving brief tours of the wonderful new facility that is just getting finished up. So come at 7:00, Wednesday, Sept 19, to hear about the remodel from the architect, and then head up to the Library for the regular meeting starting at 7:30. No one else has had this opportunity! Agenda attached.

Review the priorities of the PTA Legislative Issues survey before the meeting at this link
Region 2 Washington State PTA Legislative Issues Survey

    ----------------------------

    Open House – Tuesday, September 25th, 6:15 to 9 p.m.
  • Grade level meetings are 6:15-6:55 p.m. – location to be announced in the daily bulletin or a flyer coming home (I would check the daily bulletin on Tuesday the 25th to be sure)
  • Classroom presentations start at 7:00 - You'll follow your student's schedule - you can get it from him or her, or you can pick it up at Newport – I would do the former if at all possible. On page 6 in the last issue of the Knightline is a schedule for the evening. Seek assistance from your student to accurately complete the schedule.
  • Open House is not a time to talk about your student’s performance or grades. It is general information about the class curriculum, to find out who the teacher is, and learn what things you should be expecting through the year.
  • Bring your checkbook! Every booster item you ever wanted to buy will be available here. Great birthday/holiday shopping for freshman parents. I guarantee there will be something that you need!
  • It will be extremely crowded and loud! Arrive as early as possible and plan on running into huge traffic jams on the way out if you leave right when it is over. So carpool with your neighbor & wear your happy face!!!
  • Paid PTSA members can pick up the Student Directory at Open House. If you haven't joined yet, please consider joining Tuesday night. A membership form is available on page 4 of the last Knightline. Membership tables will be set up in the Commons. Please pick up your directory at Open House ...it’s a huge (and time consuming) job to distribute them any other way. We LOVE it when people pick them up!!
  • Classroom Bucks – Students will be coming into the second period class (homeroom) and asking for money that gets granted to the classroom for curriculum enhancement. All proceeds are tax deductible. Please give generously. . Be sure to ask your teacher if they have any examples of money granted to them. Science has lots of examples. Last year we gave over $30,000 in grants to the school.

    Open House Student Volunteers
Any student interested in volunteering at Parent Back-to-School Night from 5:45-8:45pm on Tuesday, September 25th should come to the main office to sign up. Information about specific assignments will then be distributed prior to the event. Students participating in Key Club, Honor Society, Drill, Cheer, or Leadership do not need to come to the main office area to sign up, as advisors of these groups will facilitate this sign up. Three hours of community service will be earned for this activity

    ----------------------------

    Yearbook
Yearbook staff is currently accepting submissions for the "Summer" and "Now and Then" section of the yearbook. If you had an adventurous summer and good photos to prove it please send them to Ms. Driscoll or put them in her mailbox in the main office. Also, if you have old and new photos of you and your Newport friends please submit them for the Now and Then section. Help make this one of the best yearbooks Newport has ever had!
    ----------------------------
    Tiles
Be sure to visit the Tile Wall in the new student courtyard. They look great! Our next deadline is December 1, and your tile will be placed in the first square around the corner from the tiles are already installed. Order forms can be found at the PTA website, http://www.newportptsa.org/. Proceeds go towards capital projects at the school. And you get your name on the school, so when your student comes to their 10 or 25 year reunion, they will be able to point out your contribution!
    ----------------------------
    Daily Bulletin
    Visit
http://schools.bsd405.org/nhs/homepage/index.html to see the Daily Bulletin, which are basically the announcements for the school. Information about events, clubs, dates, etc are here. If you want to get on the daily email of the bulletin, send your email address to suppesj@bsd405.org. If you have sent in your email address, and haven’t yet received an email, send it in again. I have it on good authority that this is okay and not annoying.
    ----------------------------

    College Conference
Mark you calendars: We are having a Bellevue District College Conference (for Newport, Sammamish and Robinswood students and families) here at Newport HS on Thursday, October 11th for students and parents of all grade levels. More information will follow.

    ----------------------------

    Study Skills Workshop
Newport staff is offering a free three-part study skills workshop for students. These workshops are open to the first thirty students that sign up in the main office. The workshops will be held on October 8th, 15th, and 22nd from 3-4pm. Topics include organization and time management skills, reading and writing strategies, test taking tips, note taking methods, and more!

    ----------------------------

Student Drop Off (east side of the campus accessed by turning into NHS Campus from Factoria Boulevard)

This is a drop off and pick-up location only. Please do not park and leave your car. Move your cars forward in the line as cars leave the turnaround and exit onto Factoria Boulevard. Please be considerate and courteous!!!

Disco Dance
The first of the year dance is Friday night, Sept 14, following the home football game against Skyline. Students need to buy their tickets this week. No tickets will be available at the door. Guest passes for students not attending Newport are in the office and need to be turned in by Tuesday the 11th. Remember, if your student does not attend school on Friday, he/she will not be admitted to the dance, even if he/she has purchased a ticket. And do come to the football game against Skyline on the 14th; it’s a big one!!

A quick note - to us old folks, "disco" equals "Saturday Night Fever." To a high school student, "disco" equals whatever PG-13 movie came out last with dancing in it. The normal dress code still applies.

----------------------------------------
Sweats
Order forms for Class of 2011 and sample sizes of the sweats are available in the Commons during both lunches. Orders are due by lunchtime on Friday, September 14th . Orders will be available for pick-up during Homecoming Week (first week of October).

----------------------------------------
Picture Re-takes & Picture ID
Anyone who missed pictures on Check In Day needs to come to the Commons on Wednesday, Sept 12, after 12:40. This is your last chance to get a photo ASB card. An ASB card is required for free admittance to sporting events at Newport.

Attention students attending athletic events!
Please make sure to bring your current 07/08 ASB card to all Football, Volleyball and Soccer games so you can get in free! If you have not paid for ASB and would like to, you can do this at the Accounting office located in the commons area.

----------------------------------------
All- School Play
Try-outs for the All-School-Play Much Ado About Nothing will be September 20th and 21st in the Drama room from 3:15-5:30. Try out information is available in the Commons at lunch.

----------------------------------------

Daily Bulletin
The Daily Bulletin can be read at
http://schools.bsd405.org/nhs/homepage/index.html. It’s worth reading regularly.
Select the "Newport" button, which will present you with a drop down to which you may select the "Daily Bulletin".

You also can receive the Daily Bulletin as a daily email. To receive the daily emails send a note to
suppesj@bsd405.org If you did send a note to receive it through email, and are not receiving it yet, she might have had some technical problems and didn’t get your name added to the list. Don’t hesitate to make a second request.

----------------------------------------
Big Events
Hope to see you at both of these:
· The first PTA meeting is on Sept 19 at 7:00 in the Library.
· Open House/Classroom Bucks is on Sept 25. There will be class meetings at 6:15, then you get to visit your student’s teachers starting at 7:00. During the evening, we will collect money for our annual “Classroom Bucks” fundraiser, which is all given to our wonderful teachers in the form of grants. Please give generously! Virtually every sort of booster wear, booster gear, and booster food will be on display and available for purchase on Open House night. Be sure to have a checkbook full of checks and a pocket full of cash for this night!! You will also be able to pick up your school Directory
