BSD SChool Levy Election: Tuesday, February 9th
Vote Yes for Bellevue Schools on Feb 9th!
Two items on the ballot: a replacement Educational Programs and Operation levy to support the day-to-day classroom operations: and a replacment Technology/Capital Projects levy to continue the technology work begun in the past several years and to fund large-scale maintenance projects

Volunteers Needed: Parents, students and teachers to make phone calls for the BSD Levies
Why: The Levies account for about 20% of Bellevue schools funding. If they fail, we will see larger class sizes and a
probable reduction in the 7 period day.
Bellevue parents, teachers, administrators, and students will gather January 25th through 28th to call Bellevue residents and encourage them to mail in their ballots. Don't feel comfortable asking people to vote for the levies? No problem - you can just encourage people to vote. Please join us on any of the four nights for as much time as you can give, at the PSE Building in Bellevue, from 5 pm to 8 pm. There will be and training AND FOOD! Bring your high schooler. They earn community service hours. And get to eat! Bring a friend! There will be plenty of room for everyone. Forward this email to anyone you think might be interested. Newport teachers will be calling on January 28th, if you want to see a familiar face. Email janetPTA@gmail.com for a map and more information.

A message from Scott Sturdivan the Prevention/Intervention Specialist at NHS

Happy New Year! Now is a great time to make a New Year’s resolution (or recommit to an old one) to do everything within your power to help your teen secure a healthy, safe future by giving them reasons to be drug, alcohol and tobacco free. Parents are the most powerful influence on their kids when it comes to drugs. Two-thirds of youth ages 13-17 say losing their parents’ respect is one of the main reasons they don’t smoke marijuana or use other drugs.* It’s as simple as having dinner together as a family two or three times a week, asking about their interests and whereabouts and above all, telling them you would be really disappointed if they used alcohol, marijuana, tobacco or other drugs.

I also had a few questions from my "PSAT Results and More" email and I thought that I would share the answers with you. The answers were provided by Alicia Williams, NHS Counselor. College Corner
SAT & ACT Registration Q & A (answered by Alicia Williams, NHS Counselor)

Q - So many dates to choose from - how to determine which date is best for us? Is it better to test before AP -
after AP, before finals?
A - the best date is what works for the individual student with other responsibilities and time factors built in.
Most students take the ACT and the SAT in the spring of their junior year. I often suggest the June tests because a student has more school under his or her belt and they have completed the AP exams already.

Q - Do we need to have chosen colleges before taking the test?
(Both ACT and SAT will send 4 free reports to schools chosen before tests are graded, but that does not allow you to decide if you want that particular score to go out to that particular college).
A - I personally encourage students to send the 4 scores to the top 4 schools they are applying to even though
they have not seen the scores. If they don’t like the scores they are going to retake the tests anyway and send
new scores eventually. Colleges will look at the best scores in the bunch. Also, scores are not going to be
generally the tipping point in admissions for most kids

Q - Is it safe to wait until next fall to begin the testing process?
A - I generally encourage kids to start in the spring and retake in the fall if necessary.
Q -Is there anything else we're not thinking of that we should be considering?
A - Check out the college board and the ACT website for more tips and ideas.

Couch Needed

A big favor to ask of Newport parents!!! The counselors at Newport want to make the counseling center comfortable and homey for all students. They conducted a student survey and after tallying the results the top priority was a couch.

We are wondering if anyone might have a spare couch, or know of where we could find a donated one that is:

…new or gently used

…love seat size

…brown or black

…leather or faux leather

…no rips or tears

The students have also requested some magazines to look at while they wait for their appointment. We are looking for a donation of teen appropriate magazines, or a subscription for the Newport High School Counseling Center. Thanks for helping us make the Counseling Center a welcoming place for all students!

-----------

WSPTSA Focus Day

Celebrate MLK Day by attending FOCUS DAY , Monday January 18th– a chance to talk with our state legislators about education concerns for this session. Another enormous budget shortfall is projected this year making this issue of critical importance to anyone with students in the state public education system. You can drive, carpool, or join our District bus and socialize with other parents on the ride to/from Olympia. Please email newportptsa@cfmm.com if you want to reserve a seat. This is actually quite fun. You’ll learn a lot, meet some new people, and make a difference for children across the state by just showing up.

This year the chairs chose the MLK holiday for Focus Day and plan to have lots of kid-friendly activities. The theme of the day will be “Cuts Hurt Kids” and the presence of children is meant to reinforce for our Legislators how vital it is to fund education. It would be a wonderful time to bring a large group of high-school students to the Capitol.

• Upgrade the former Ringdall Middle School to house middle school students whose schools are being remodeled;
• Complete large-scale maintenance projects such as roofs, flooring, and mechanical, electrical, water and sewer systems;
• Improve or replace sports fields; and
• Provide support for common curriculum and assessments.
