Year End Wrap Up!

Another school year coming to an end. And to think back to September when we were wondering when it would ever start! Can you believe our students have only two more years of high school? Time sure flies. And it will fly at warp speed in the next couple of years. Just a few reminders for your students this summer. And be sure to read the information from our 2011 Grad Knight committee.

Year End Info

Locker Clean Out: Locker cleanout day was today June 10th. Students who were absent can go to the office after school on Thursday, June 11 or Friday, June 12, and a staff member will check out their locker. Students with lockers not checked out by June 12 will receive a fine of $5. Locker assignments are posted outside the office. There will be no allowances made for “I didn’t know I had a locker.” Locker cleanout is an all-school event. Unless you have an excused absence, there will be no waiving of the fine for “My teacher didn’t tell me.”

Computer Files: Student folders, including common folders, will be deleted over the summer. Students will need to back up any files they wish to save to a USB memory stick of other device by the end of this school year. Students should ask for assistance if they have any problems.

Yearbooks!!!
Yearbooks will be available at the ASB Secreatary’s office. You must pay your fines and have a valid I.D. to pick up your book. You cannot pick up books for friends or siblings. Only parents can pick up books for a student who is not present.

If you did not order a yearbook, but want one, go to the Accountant’s Office on Thursday, June 11. Books will be sold first come-first serve for $65 each.

Attention all track and field athletes: If you have not yet turned in your uniform you have one more chance. Final uniform turn in will take place on Wed June 17th after school in the commons. Uniforms may also be turned in to Mrs. Heffernan's classroom (2119) during tutorial.

Summer School: Students should check with their counselor to get registration materials for summer school.

Final Exams: See schedule at the end of this email. Please note the start time on each day of exams.

Summer - Volunteer Hours/College Visits

Summer is also a great time for students to build up their volunteer hours…..all students need 40 hours of volunteer time to graduate, and those who do 100 or more can earn the “Knight Valor” award from our PTSA. Details at http://www.newportptsa.org/KnightValor/Index.html. Here are some upcoming community service opportunities for those in need of some hours: See Ms. Owen in the counseling center for more information.

College Visits
It’s very, very hard to fit in visits to all the colleges your student will want to see during Junior year. It’s much easier to begin early & visit a few colleges in the summer. Campus tours are offered at most schools all summer long; consult school web sites for details. There won’t be many students present, but the weather will be much better than in February! It’s also wise to check admission requirements at favorite colleges – this is the best time to discover if a school requires something unusual, such as 3-4 years of foreign language.

News from the 2011 Grad Knight Committee

Beach towel sales that support 2011 Grad Knight are still going on. We purchased some extra towels (to get the good price break) and I would like to sell those soon. PLEASE consider buying a beach towel and/or sending an email out to other parents and ask them to buy a towel. Attached is the revised towel order form.

Our Spring Fundraising letter campaign was fairly successful. We raised about $1,200 with just a couple of emails. Thanks to all you who donated in that effort. We will do this each year. And it is not too late to send in your donation of $25 or more to Grad Knight 2011.

We will be planning a garage sale at the Newport Shores annual event. THANKS so much to Gwen VanLoos for donating her garage/yard for this effort. SAVE THE DATE for September 12th to help at yard sale. Please begin to collect items to donate to the sale. HINT: Be sure they are clean, all parts in working order and priced. If you do this as you go, it's not such a big job that week! If you'd like to help organize this effort, please let me know - we need one or two people to take this on with Gwen!
