PTSA Meeting: STUDY SKILLS FOR PARENTS-WEDNESDAY 7pm [NHS Library]
The first part of the meeting will be interactive -- a discussion with our own Tammy Small called "STUDY SKILLS FOR PARENTS" and the second part is our business meeting. We hope to see you there!

Open House/Back-To-School Night, Thursday
- If you are new to Newport, plan to arrive early (mainly to be able to park) and attend the Grade Level meeting at 6:15. Juniors will meet in the outside gym. If you can't arrive early, please consider carpooling.
- Classroom presentations start at 7:00. Bring a copy of your student's schedule. Please have your student fill out their schedule on page 4 of the Knightline. Maps will be available.
- Be sure to pick up your student directory (free to all PTSA members). If you haven't joined, please do. - Membership forms will be available at the membership table.
- If you are still looking for your student's school pictures, these will also be available for pick-up at the membership table.
- Go Shopping! Browse the array of Newport booster "gear" in the Commons. Don't forget your checkbook! Junior Class Officers will be selling Entertainment Books and some leftover sweats from last year! The Grad Knight Committee will be selling beach towels! Remember - you need one of these and really should buy it Thursday night!
- And when you hear the Classroom Bucks announcement during 2nd period please give generously - this money goes straight into our classrooms in the form of Grants to our teachers.

Back-To-School Night is NOT a time to talk about your student's performance or grades. Teachers will offer a brief summary of curriculum. Conversations about individual needs/concerns are best addressed in a separate appointment.

Entertainment Books
If you pre-ordered Entertainment books, you can pick these up on Thursday night. Additional books will be available for sale.

9/24 - Open House, First Pick up day, Books for sale without order form
10/7 - Second Order Form due date

Homecoming Theme - Knights in TV LAND

Guest Pass Policy
To bring a guest, fill out the guest pass form. Then have your guest take it to their school, and have an administrator sign it and attach a business card. If your guest is not in high school, you will need to attach a copy of their driver’s license or other picture ID. Bring the completed form to the Main Office no later than 3:15 on the Wednesday before the dance. You will receive a guest pass that you will then use to buy your guest a ticket. Your guest will need to bring ID to the dance. http://schools.bsd405.org/nhs/homepage/activities2/index.htm

SAT Info
I have been providing information regarding SAT prep and practice tests. There is a lot of information coming our way from the school, college board and prep classes. Quite frankly this can be a little overwhelming for us as parents and just a little stressful for our students. I have had several questions regarding prep classes, how much $$ and how much time to invest to prepare for the test. I have asked the counselor to address these questions at our Junior Class Meeting at Open House. The great thing is that all of our Juniors will take the PSAT on Wednesday, October 14th. Once the test is returned, you will have the opportunity to see if your student might need additional help in a weak area and come up with a plan of action that might include a tutor or prep class. Most of the students will do just fine and a few might just surprise you! And they have many opportunities to take the test between now and their Senior year.

Here are a couple of articles that provide a little perspective and some food for thought...

Everyone Should Take the SAT Less Seriously -
